Up until now, Destiny 2’s PvP component has remained largely the same, at least in terms of what game modes it offers. However, that will change with the upcoming release of the game’s Forsaken expansion, an expansion which will include a brand new PvP mode called Breakthrough.
According to information that was gleaned from Game Informer’s recent Forsaken cover story, Breakthrough will be a new addition to Destiny 2’s competitive playlist, which means that it will feature two teams of four vying for victory. In each Breakthrough match, both teams will start off by trying to secure a neutral central objective called the Breaker. Once one team finally locks the Breaker down, the dynamic of the match shifts, with the Breaker-controlling team having to then assail and ultimately capture the other team’s Vault.
If the attacking team secures the Vault, they get a point, but if the defenders can hold out for long enough, the point goes to them instead. Like all other competitive modes, Breakthrough will be played over a series of rounds, with each round involving a fresh new fight to capture the Breaker and then either attack or defend a Vault. This means that, over the course of a single Breakthrough match, both teams can potentially take on the role of attackers or defenders, it all depends on how good they are at securing the Breaker.
The addition of Breakthrough will up the number of potential competitive modes to three, with Breakthrough joining the currently available Survival and Countdown competitive modes. The competitive playlist is meant to function as a more intense ranking-based PvP experience, while Destiny 2’s Quickplay PvP option provides a more casual and relaxed environment in which to frag your fellow players.
Along with adding in the new Breakthrough mode, Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion will also drastically raise the maximum level cap and tweak the weekly refresh rate for certain endgame activities.
