Under ideal circumstances, Destiny 2: Forsaken’s new Gambit mode can be a whole lot of fun thanks to its clever mix of PvE and PvP gameplay. However, one of the expansion’s new Exotic weapon quests has a particular step that’s making Gambit a very frustrating experience since it actively encourages players to ignore the plights of their fellow teammates.
Once a player wraps up the new Forsaken story campaign, one of the post-campaign tasks they can go about doing is the restoration of the Ace of Spades Exotic hand cannon. As is the case with several other Destiny 2 Exotic weapons, getting your hands on the Ace of Spades requires the completion of an associated quest which has a number of distinct steps, and one of those steps is killing five invading enemy players in Gambit using a hand cannon.
Again, in an ideal world such a requirement wouldn’t be a huge problem. You most certainly want to kill invading players in Gambit since they can prove to be a real nuisance if left unchecked, but constantly keeping an eye out for invaders is far from the only thing you should be doing during a Gambit match. Unfortunately, the Ace of Spades quest step encourages this exact sort of behavior, leading to matches where frustrated players look on as their teammates camp the areas where invaders spawn, ignoring the rest of the match and all but guaranteeing that their team will lose.
It is because of this specific Ace of Spades quest step that the official Destiny subreddit is currently filled with threads like this one in which players are expressing their annoyance. Granted, some of the player grievances can be attributed to players who don’t fully understand how Gambit works, but in most cases the main problem appears to be players who are tunnel-vision focused on getting their five invader hand cannon kills.
Funnily enough, many players who are working to complete the quest (be they camper or no) are just as unhappy since they don’t enjoy being forced to play a competitive multiplayer mode just to unlock an Exotic weapon. Granted, this isn’t the first time Bungie has made PvP into a requirement for unlocking a new Exotic, but that doesn’t make it any less of a frustrating situation.
Something which slightly compounds the issue is that a special ornament for the Ace of Spades is one of the items included in the Forsaken expansion’s Cayde’s Stash pre-order incentive, again subtly encouraging players to endure the hardships needed to add the Ace of Spades to their arsenal. As of this writing, Bungie hasn’t offered any comment on the issue but hopefully it has some sort of solution in the works.
