A few days ago, Destiny 2’s player community discovered a hidden in-game mission that served as the catalyst for a much larger mystery. Now, the mystery has been solved, and it turns out that seeing it through to its end allows players to unlock one heck of an Exotic weapon.
It all began when one player made a curious discovery on Io, one of Destiny 2’s planetary patrol zone destinations. It turns out that while Io’s Taken invasion public event (an event that only occasionally appears in one small section of the entire patrol zone) is active, a portal will pop up if players manage to fell the event’s mini-boss, a powerful Taken enemy named Urzok, Aspect of Hate who resides in a cave near the event’s main staging area. Obviously the portal wasn’t always there or fans likely would have found it much earlier. Current speculation suggests that the portal might have been added in back when Destiny 2’s Warmind DLC launched, and the main reason it was only discovered now is because Io happens to be the current Flashpoint destination.
Once Urzok is dead and the portal is up, players can enter the portal to begin a new mission called ‘The Whisper’ which involves completing a series of tough jumping puzzles and clearing rooms filled with powerful Taken enemies. The catch is that players only have 20 minutes to complete The Whisper before they’re booted back out to Io proper and have to wait until the next Taken invasion event. If this sounds familiar that’s because it has an eerily similar setup to a hidden timed mission in the original Destiny that awarded players a powerful Exotic sniper rifle called The Black Spindle if they managed to finish it.
Well, get ready for a little déjà vu because those who successfully finish The Whisper are awarded a brand new Taken-themed Exotic sniper rifle called Whisper of the Worm that not only looks cool but also functions as a sort of upgraded version of The Black Spindle. Whisper of the Worm’s unique perk, White Nail, allows it to deal bonus precision damage, and when a player lands three precision hits in a row, the weapon’s magazine auto-refills without pulling from the player’s existing ammo reserves. This means that, under the right circumstances, Whisper of the Worm can be fired virtually indefinitely as long as the player can keep landing precision shots.
After a player has cleared The Whisper, their work is not quite done. It turns out that completing the initial quest unlocks a second Heroic difficulty quest which, if completed, unlocks Whisper of the Worm’s Exotic catalyst. Within the Heroic version of The Whisper, there’s also one final secret that involves opening chests and defeating oracles from the Vault of Glass (!!!) in a certain order. Completing that final secret challenge awards a blueprint for a unique Exotic ship, and in order to fulfill the blueprint’s requirements, the player has to complete the Heroic version of The Whisper once with each of the three elemental singes active (so they’ll have to wait at least another two weeks since singes rotate on a weekly basis).
In other Destiny 2 news, players will soon be able to partake in the game’s Solstice of Heroes event, and in the meantime they can check out the recently launches 1.2.3 game update.
