Redditor Redillux recently posited an interesting suggestion on the official Destiny subreddit. While Destiny 2’s Super abilities are visually impressive, Redillux suggested a new Eververse category for cosmetically altering those Supers. Specifically, the suggestion involved being able to change the colors of Super-based effects, thus offering players some variety. However, the specific mentioning of changing colors sparked a debate about the interplay between game balance and visuals.
Destiny 2 and the Importance of Super Colors
The very first comment in Redillux’s post pointed out a key flaw in their cosmetically customizable Supers idea. The colors assigned to Destiny 2’s Supers clearly denote the Super’s associated Guardian sub-class. If a Titan’s Super has purple visual effects, you know they’re a Sentinel Titan. When a Hunter’s Super bathes them in orange light, they’re clearly a Gunslinger Hunter. If players could change the color of their Supers that instantly recognizable distinction would suddenly be gone.
Another unappealing scenario which commenters pointed out was mistaking one Super type from another. Redillux specifically suggested changing the beam color of the Stormcaller Warlock’s Chaos Reach Super from blue to purple. However, this would cause some observers to assume the Warlock was a Voidwalker and not a Stormcaller. In high-level PvP, knowing what kind of Super an enemy has equipped makes all the difference. Redillux’s suggestion would essentially remove that advantage entirely.
To their credit, Redillux argued that the color of a Super is far from the only indicator in play. If you hear a distinct clanging sound, you know a nearby Titan just activated their Hammer of Sol Super. If a Hunter whips out a staff and starts busting out combos, they’re an Arcstrider no matter their color. Sadly, most of Redillux’s responses are now buried under a heap of downvotes.
Destiny 2 Potential Alternate Super Colors
Some commenters offered useful compromises amidst the arguing and infighting. One potential tweak would be rather simple to implement: just disable cosmetic Super changes during PvP matches. Another idea involves using related colors that are visually distinct but still convey what the Super is. So, for example, potential alternate colors would be thusly:
- Arc (blue): green, teal
- Solar (orange): red, white
- Void (purple): pink, maroon
At the very least it’s an interesting idea, and if done correctly it would certainly make the Eververse more palatable. In other Destiny 2 news, fans still want Year One armor to become relevant again. Destiny 2’s holiday-themed Dawning event has also begun its 2018 iteration.
