Currently, Destiny 2’s gear rarity scale is pretty basic, progressing from common (white) rarity up to uncommon (green), rare (blue), legendary (purple), and finally exotic (yellow). However, a recent Reddit theory posits that Bungie might be planning to implement yet another rarity tier as early as next year.
The original Reddit thread that posits the new rarity tier doesn’t outline the most stable of arguments, but it’s still an interesting angle to consider nonetheless. As part of Game Informer’s recent coverage of Destiny 2’s upcoming Forsaken expansion, several Bungie developers were asked to answer 113 rapid-fire questions about the expansion. One question was what color Bungie would choose should Destiny 2 ever get a new gear rarity tier, and interestingly enough, the developers already had an answer prepared: black.
Now, if you’ll recall, one of the three smaller expansions that will be included in Destiny 2’s annual pass is called Black Armory, an interesting coincidence to be sure. The Reddit poster says that it likely will end up being nothing more than a coincidence, but given Bungie’s penchant for teasing and toying with the Destiny fan community, the possibility that Black Armory will introduce a new rarity tier cannot be discounted completely.
Commenters in the Reddit thread pointed out that it would be highly unlikely (not to mention foolish) for Bungie to lock an entire gear rarity tier behind a paid DLC expansion, but given how previous expansions have also included free elements that are available to all players, there’s no reason to assume such wouldn’t be the case with Black Armory. Other commenters also suggested that a black rarity tier might take a similar form as The Division’s Classified rarity tier, which is basically an enhanced (and much rarer) version of existing gear.
In other Destiny 2 equipment news, the game’s upcoming Forsaken expansion will be getting an interesting new auto rifle called Cerberus +1 as well as a whole slew of new exotics.
