Now that Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion is up and running, the next series of content updates that players have to look forward to are the three mini-expansions which make up the game’s Annual Pass. In a recent Q&A interview with Polygon, Bungie revealed that the Annual Pass expansions won’t add any new planets to Destiny 2, but they will feature new locations for players to explore.

During the Q&A, Destiny 2 game director Steve Cotton and project lead Scott Taylor fielded questions about both the Forsaken expansion and the year 2 content plans Bungie has in store, plans that include the three Annual Pass expansions which are titled Black Armory (Winter, 2018), Joker’s Wild (Spring, 2019), and Penumbra (Summer, 2019). When asked whether the expansions would include new places for players to venture to, Taylor answered in the affirmative before quickly clarifying that none of the new locations will be the size of an entire new planet:
“We’re going to have new places to check out. Sorry, I should be specific. What we call ‘bubbles’ or new spaces; I’m not saying new planets.”
It’s important to note Taylor’s specific use of the phrase “new planets.” Fans have already begun to speculate that this particular verbiage leaves the door open for previously featured planets and destinations to make a return. Granted, many of the same planetary destinations from the original Destiny are now also present in Destiny 2, but if Bungie were to add in, say, Destiny’s Venus or Moon destinations, Taylor would technically still be telling the truth. Another rumor even suggests that the Penumbra expansion will involve heading back to the massive Hive Dreadnaught, the main new location that was featured in Destiny’s Taken King expansion.
We won’t know for sure just how big the Annual Pass expansions will be until they arrive on Destiny 2’s live servers, but it’s good to know at least that Bungie plans on giving players new places to explore, even if they’re not as big as planets.
