With tomorrow’s launch of Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion, Bungie will also be inserting some new content into the game which will be a timed exclusive for PlayStation 4 players, continuing a controversial trend that the entire Destiny fanbase has long bemoaned.
Due to an ongoing partnership between Sony and Destiny 2 publisher Activision, the Destiny franchise has always included content that was a timed exclusive for the PlayStation 4 as far back as the launch of the first Destiny game. In the grand scheme of things, the content that’s locked behind this timed exclusivity isn’t very substantial, usually consisting of certain Crucible maps, weapons, and even strikes, but it’s never fun feeling like you’re getting punished just because you prefer one gaming platform over another.
As Sony recently detailed in this PlayStation Blog post, Forsaken’s PS4-exclusive content includes the following:
- An Exotic trace rifle weapon called the Wavesplitter which fires a supersonic energy beam
- A strike called Broodhold in which players delve down into a Hive lair located in the Tangled Shore and ultimately confront a powerful Hive Brood Queen
- Three armor sets, one for each Guardian class (Thorium Holt for Warlocks, Red Moon Phantom for Hunters, and Mimetic Savior for Titans)
- A ship called Great Beyond
- A free Destiny 2 Forsaken PS4 home menu theme
Aside from the home menu theme, all of the above content will eventually come to the PC and Xbox One versions of Destiny 2. Unfortunately, the timed exclusivity window for Destiny content tends to last for about a year, so those playing on non-PS4 platforms will have to wait quite a while before they can wield Wavesplitter or challenge the Hive Brood Queen.
The silver lining is that Bungie plans to add a lot of non-timed-exclusive content to Destiny 2 following the launch of Forsaken, much of which you can see courtesy of this new ViDoc.
