DICE is Likely to Add Extra Classes to Battlefield 5 Post Launch

Since the end of the recent Battlefield 5 Open Beta, DICE has said a great deal about the game’s classes and combat roles. They recently published detailed breakdowns of the Assault, Medic, Recon, and Support classes. In addition, they also clarified exactly how the Tanker and Pilot classes appear in Battlefield 5. During a recent Reddit AMA, the studio also clarified that they were likely to add new Battlefield 5 classes, not just new combat roles, post launch.

DICE’s Plans for Battlefield 5 Classes Post Launch

DICE recently held a Reddit AMA, led by David Sirland, the game’s Multiplayer Producer. The AMA was principally focused on the Battlefield 5 classes and combat roles; Sirland and two other developers answered a range of fan questions on that topic. Fans already knew that DICE has plans to add extra Combat Roles to the game through post-launch releases. However, Sirland explained that they were likely to add entirely new classes as well.

DICE is Apparently Likely to Add More Battlefield 5 Classes Beyond the Current Four

“Combat Roles is less limiting from a load out perspective, yes,” explains Sirland; “and more about deepening the effectiveness of certain play styles. This change and some of this rationale for launch comes from us knowing that most players pick a class based on the primary weapon class – which limits the usage of some of the previous archetypes severely. The initial Combat Roles cover the basic playstyles of the launch package, and we will expand on this over time through our live service. We will also most likely still do more specialized classes and combat roles over time (yes, new/more classes!) – similar to that originally outlined stealth weapon hybrid referenced by you and others.”

Of course, it’s currently unknown what new class ideas DICE might have in mind. It seems likely that the studio may wait for player feedback to see where a new class might best fit. Assault, Medic, Recon, and Support seems to neatly cover most of the core play-styles. As a result, as Sirland says, future classes could be more specialized than those core four.
