Back in October of last year, DICE announced that they would not be releasing a Battlefield game in 2020. Instead, after releasing a second year of content for Battlefield V, they would aim to release the next Battlefield sometime in EA’s fiscal year 2022 (April 2021 – March 2022). Now, DICE has confirmed that the next Battlefield game, which will be coming to next-gen consoles, will actually be launching in 2021.
The Next Battlefield Game is Coming in 2021
DICE recently released a blog post concerning the future of Battlefield. In it, they confirmed that they will soon be halting new content releases for both Star Wars: Battlefront II and Battlefield V, in order to focus on the development of their next Battlefield game. According to EA, the reason why they’re avoiding a 2020 release is because of the shift to next-gen consoles; “Bringing out Battlefield [in 2020], where the new console base is fairly small,” stated EA; “doesn’t really give justice to the potential of the title, and so that’s part of our driver in moving the title into fiscal 2022.”
In the recent blog, DICE Creative Director Dennis Brännvall clarifies that the next Battlefield title will be coming in 2021. “Longer term,” he writes; “the studio is focused on the future of Battlefield that we’ll be bringing to players in 2021”. This means that the next Battlefield should be releasing sometime between April and December 2021. Given that window, a release in either September, October, or early November is most likely. (Barring any possible delays closer to the release date, of course.)
Unfortunately for Battlefield fans in the immediate future, DICE will only be releasing one more Tides of War Chapter. Back in October, when DICE announced “Battlefield V Year 2” prior to the start of Chapter 5, many believed that the announcement meant another four Chapters of Tides of War, launching over the course of the year. Unfortunately, only three will actually see release, with the final Chapter 7 coming in the summer. According to DICE, the game will still receive some periodical patches and updates, but no new content updates.
