According to the newest financial report from Sony, digital sales growth for PlayStation 4 software is going strong. For the entire fiscal year of 2017, digital software sales comprised 32% of overall software sales. During the most recent quarter, that percentage climbed to 43%. As it was 27% the fiscal year before, there is a clear pattern of steady growth.
Plenty of gamers do still buy traditional physical discs, but digital sales and downloads are rapidly becoming more popular and a point may come soon where they exceed physical sales altogether. While digital downloads do have their drawbacks, they are undeniably fast and convenient, and companies like Sony frequently offer great deals.
Indeed, this is one of the reasons why Sony’s software and subscription sales have been climbing steadily. While sales of the PS4 are winding down (as is expected at this stage of its life cycle), these digital sales have fueled rising profits over the past fiscal year.
With PlayStation 5 currently being developed, it will be interesting to see how this trend influences the features which Sony chooses to include with the next gen console. We’ll keep you posted here with all the updates, so check back in again soon!
