A Doom port for Android smartphones exists and on top of that, it is a VR one. Have you been looking for a VR Doom experience on your smartphones? Good thing there is one and it is as challenging as it is fun.
DoomGLES, a.k.a. D-GLES, is an unofficial 3D hardware accelerated source port of the Doom Engine and has introduced support for VR. It uses the graphics processor of a smartphone or tablet device to deliver some high-quality graphics that did not exist in the original Doom release. The game has actually a rather high resolution with some respectful lighting, particle effects, realistic water effects and real-time shadows.
Additionally, it supports Xperia Play gamepad buttons and owns a keyboard support for Bluetooth and USB. To top it all off, D-GLES also supports network gaming with instructions on how to make it available on the Kokak’s official website.
If you already own the commercial version of Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, TNT and Plutonia, you can extract the WAD files – custom files and maps – and transfer them into the game, if you would like to try them out in VR. Moreover, there are packs included in the D-GLES download such as the Freedom and Requiem mega packs, for any of you who were wondering.
Here is the demo of D-GLES VR gameplay and how it looks like in case you were interested in purchasing it:
You can purchase D-GLES for Android from the Google Play Store at the price of $2.53. In addition, if you are up for some virtual-reality experience, you can pay an additional $1 to unlock the VR mode of the game. This mode allows players to experience the game in VR simply by using a Cardboard headset.
Do you want to play Doom on your smartphones in VR? Try out D-GLES, which has it all and is available at a very good price for Androids.
