Evo 2018 broke records across the board but none were bigger than Dragon Ball FighterZ. The Dragon Ball FighterZ Grand Finals of Evo 2018 brought in a peak concurrent last night of 258,000 viewers on Twitch to make it the most watched event in the history of the popular fighting tournament. This is even crazier given that it overtook the main event game Street Fighter V.
It’s surprising that the Dragon Ball FighterZ Grand Finals did so well considering that it was one of the newcomers to the Evo tournament this year in Las Vegas. That could have been in its favor since fans were looking forward to seeing competitors go against one another in a game that released earlier this year.
Also, the Dragon Ball FighterZ Grand Finals was the only final match at Evo 2018 where North America had a chance to see one of our own take home the championship. The watch was certainly worth it since North America’s SonicFox was able to nab the win over Japan’s Go1 in a dramatic finish.
Seeing the Dragon Ball FighterZ Grand Finals get a huge spike in viewership to become the most watched event of Evo 2018 was surprising. The first two days of the tournament certainly made it seem unlikely for that to happen given that main event game Street Fighter V was bringing in more than double the viewers on Twitch. But FighterZ was able to make a comeback in the finals to break records everywhere.
The Dragon Ball FighterZ Grand Finals wasn’t the only event to see a ton of viewers show up for. The entire Evolution Championship Series 2018 saw a major increase in popularity over 2017. All of the Evo 2018 main stage games including Street Fighter V, Super Smash Bros Melee, Guilty Gear, and Tekken 7 also saw significant increases over viewership from last year.
