It seems that Dragon Quest XI Switch could still be a ways off from release. The 11th entry in the famed JRPG series, Echoes of an Elusive Age, is already out in Japan on PS4 and 3DS with a Western release fast approaching. Oddly enough, neither the original Japanese launch nor the Western release includes the promised Switch version. This is alarming considering how long it has been since the initial announcement.
Before we ever knew what the Nintendo Switch would be called, Square Enix announced the first two games for it. They would be Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest XI. While the former came to it – only in Japan – rather quickly after launch, the latter has still yet to arrive. This is concerning as Dragon Quest XI Switch hasn’t even released in Japan and it’s been almost a year since it came to PS4 and 3DS.
This unfortunate circumstance was addressed by Polygon in a recent interview with Dragon Quest XI Switch Director Takeshi Uchikawa and Producers Hokuto Okamoto and Hikari Kubota at E3 2018. When asked, Okamoto revealed that the team is “still making it” and that he “can’t say anything more.”
That, of course, didn’t stop Polygon from pressing further. According to Okamoto, the developer announced a Dragon Quest XI Switch release long before the console came out. Because of this, the dev kit used hadn’t been finalized and the hardware specs for the console were yet to be released. It is possible that the dev kit used by Square Enix differs significantly from the actual specifications of the console that consumers own.
That would certainly explain the “many things” that must be ironed out before the Dragon Quest XI Switch can release. Hilariously, Okamoto did ask the interviewer from Polygon to stop asking about the Switch version. We also had the chance to ask a Square Enix producer about a different game coming to Switch so we highly recommend you check out the exclusive answer he gave us here.
