Following similar announcements from Sony, Gearbox, and other companies in the gaming industry, Activision has announced their decision to postpone the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 4. The new season was due to start today. However, in solidarity with the ongoing protests against racial injustice, Activision has chosen not to distract from more important events.
Modern Warfare Season 4 Postponed to a Later Date
Yesterday, Activision took to social media to release a statement postponing the Modern Warfare Season 4 launch; “While we look forward to playing the new seasons of Modern Warfare, Warzone, and Call of Duty: Mobile, now is not the time,” reads the statement; “We are moving the launches of Modern Warfare Season 4 and Call of Duty: Mobile Season 7 to later dates. Right now it’s time for those speaking up for equality, justice and change to be seen and heard. We stand alongside you.”
The statement echoes similar decisions by other gaming companies in the last week. Sony, for example, has chosen to postpone their highly-anticipated PS5 game reveal event which was due to take place tomorrow. Gearbox has similarly postponed the release of their new Borderlands 3 Takedown mission, while CD Projekt Red has postponed their Night City Wire event to the end of the month. Throughout the industry, many studios have been muting their social media channels save for messages of solidarity with the ongoing protests.
Activision has yet to announce when Modern Warfare Season 4 will now launch. As their social media channels remain mute, they are unlikely to clarify a date immediately. Thus far, they have only echoed a statement from Infinity Ward pledging further action against racist behaviour in their games. This statement includes pledges to include; “additional resources to monitor and ID racist content. […] additional in-game reporting systems to increase the number of bans by hour. […] Filters and greater restrictions on name changes. […] improvements to make it easier to report offences. […]” and finally; “permanent bans to root out repeat offenders.”
