Over the past few years, the promotion of gambling products toward young people has become a subject of considerable controversy. Now, EA is wading into those dubious waters. Indeed, EA promoted microtransactions in a toy magazine. As children would read such a publication, they might be tempted to purchase loot boxes for FIFA 21. Let’s learn more.
EA Promoted Microtransactions in a Magazine Kids Would Read
You can see the magazine ad in this tweet:
The ad was in Smyths Toys magazine.
A lot of people already dislike EA’s loot box system, resenting that you cannot be all that competitive with Ultimate Team mode unless you purchase points. But even those who do not mind the system in general are mortified that EA would stoop to promoting them at kids.
At the end of the day, much of the responsibility of keeping kids from developing gambling problems lies with parents. It is up to parents to educate their kids about the dangers of problem gambling, and to set rules on purchases of points and loot boxes. But most parents probably would not expect their kid to run into this type of advertisement while browsing a toy catalog. While EA may have been targeting adults with the ad (as parents would also read a toy catalog), it does seem like an unnecessary place to advertise points.
