The Witcher Series Celebrates its Eleventh Anniversary
The original Witcher RPG launched on the 26th of October, 2007. It was followed by The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings in 2011, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2015. Although the studio hasn’t released a full RPG in that series since then, it has released both Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, and now Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, the first actual RPG since the release of The Witcher 3. CD Projekt Red hasn’t ruled out making another Witcher RPG in the future. However, the studio also hasn’t said what form that may take. They have said that they likely wouldn’t make a direct sequel to The Witcher 3, or a game featuring Geralt of Rivia as the main character. Indeed, as Thronebreaker has proved, the Witcher setting is ripe for new storytelling.
To mark the eleventh anniversary; CD Projekt Red has been releasing unknown trivia about the development of The Witcher series on social media in recent days. These posts have included concept art of Philippa Eilhart’s gemstone eyes, a ghost ship which appears in The Witcher 3, and a cut Focus Mode which was planned for the game. They also showed concept art for boats designed to be large enough to accommodate Roach in The Witcher 3. Today, the studio released a new piece of artwork designed as a desktop wallpaper, free to download.
The next major title to come from CD Projekt Red will be Cyberpunk 2077; their first significant foray into new territory since the launch of The Witcher, eleven years ago. Nevertheless, the enduring popularity of The Witcher series all but ensures that fans will continue to see more content coming for the franchise. Indeed, the director of Thronebreaker has hinted that The Witcher Tales could become a series in its own right.
