Last year, there were two major mod projects aiming to remake Fallout games in Fallout 4. Capital Wasteland was aiming to remake Fallout 4, while Fallout 4: New Vegas was aiming to remake Fallout: New Vegas. Both mods ran into a problem, however, when Bethesda stated that the modders couldn’t take the original dialogue from either game and put them into Fallout 4, due to certain copyright rules. While Fallout 4: New Vegas will re-record the game’s dialogue with new voice actors, Capital Wasteland totally halted development. Now, however, it seems that work is beginning again on the project.
Work is Underway Once More on “Capital Wasteland,” the Fallout 3 Remake Mod
Although Capital Wasteland could theoretically have continued without Bethesda’s support, the team chose not to risk any legal trouble. Rather than cancelling the project outright, they instead put it on hold until such time as they felt able to begin again. That time has apparently now come. The team’s project lead, NafNaf_95, made an announcement yesterday on the mod’s official website; “In the past year since the cancellation announcement,” they write; “a small but dedicated group of people from the original team have continued to slowly chip away at this gargantuan task. Progress has been slow considering the active team is now smaller than 10 people but nonetheless we can’t way to show you what has been done during that time.”
It seems that the mod team have opted to take the same route as the team working on Fallout 4: New Vegas. As such, they will be aiming to re-record the original dialogue with new voice actors. There are apparently a few actors already working on the project; “A recreation is what it is,” says NafNaf_95; “its not identical but we want to try our best to capture the original feel. I mean with any of these modding projects, it’s really a case of diving in the deep end and seeing what happens.”
Of course, the mod has no formal release date. Indeed, it will likely remain a work in progress for a long time. However, with work formally starting up again, fans can at least look forward to the mod coming out eventually.
