Fallout 4: New Vegas is one of the more ambitious mods currently in development. Aiming to recreate all of Fallout: New Vegas in Fallout 4; the mod team have been working on the project for many months. In their most recent devlog update, the team addressed fans’ misconceptions over their use of ENBs and Reshade presets.
Addressing Misconceptions About Fallout 4: New Vegas
Posted earlier this week, the latest update addresses things which some fans appear to have misunderstood. “ENB and Reshade are fantastic tools that allow users to customize the look of their game,” explained the update; “and can fundamentally change the overall tone of a game with the tweaks they allow… That said, depending on the hardware of the user, they can have a serious impact upon performance.” It seems that some fans have criticized the mod team under the mistaken belief that screenshots were edited after being taken. The update went on to clarify further that this wasn’t the case.
“As well, much of what these tools enable can be done natively within the Creation Engine by utilizing the various imagespace and weather modifiers available to our effects and level design teams, so such a potential performance hit is unneeded. To that end, F4NV will not have any official Reshade or ENB presets included, and none of the images we have showcased have these effects applied. Indeed, none of our shots have been edited, instead being taken straight from in-engine.”
Shadows and Darkness in Fallout 4: New Vegas
The update then addressed the use of shadows and darkness in Fallout 4: New Vegas; “Many users have commented on how dark some of our night time screenshots look, and asked whether or not we’re aiming for some sort of exaggerated look like some lighting overhauls aim to do, or simply asked why we made that choice. This is not simply an aesthetic choice for F4NV, but also a gameplay decision.”
The team went on to clarify the reason for the change; it was aimed at improving certain items in Fallout: New Vegas. These items helped players to see better in the dark.
“Unfortunately, due to the way lighting was handled in New Vegas,” explained the update; “these pieces of equipment were more often than not useless… As F4NV aims to be more than a remaster, we see this as an opportunity to increase the utility of these items where appropriate.”
Hopefully, these clarifications will put to rest any lingering fan concerns over their screenshots. It certainly seems that the Fallout 4: New Vegas team has a good plan for what they’re attempting to do. As of yet, the mod has no release date, but the team is posting regular updates online.
