Fallout 4: New Vegas is one of the largest and most ambitious mod projects around. The team involved are aiming to rebuild the entirety of Fallout: New Vegas within the Fallout 4 engine. Moreover, they’re also tweaking and improving the game as they go, rather than creating a 1:1 copy. In their latest update, the developers showcased a new redesigned weapon; the Varmint Rifle.
The Fallout 4: New Vegas Varmint Rifle
Fallout 4: New Vegas is certainly ambitious, but it also has one thing that very few mods do; the official backing of Bethesda. The mod team are very active on the project, and have a large community of fans looking forward to the finished product. The development team also publish regular devlogs and updates to keep their fans up-to-date with what stage the project is at. Their latest update concerns the new Varmint Rifle; a simple, bolt-action rifle which is available in both 5.56 and .22 caliber.
“Sometimes, you don’t need to stop a charging Nightkin.” states the update; “Some folks in the Mojave have more mundane concerns to worry about, such as the threat of geckos encroaching on their home, or giant mantises taking up residence in their basement. When that happens, you don’t need a minigun or a grenade launcher, just a simple rifle that gets the job done.”
The Varmint Rifle was modeled by Syn, a member of the Fallout 4: New Vegas 3D team. It’s designed to be a fairly low-power weapon which is best used against weaker enemies in the Mojave. This isn’t the first weapon redesign which the mod team have shown off; last month, the team showcased redesigns for the 10mm submachine gun. The modeling for the Varmint Rifle are not quite in the finished state which that weapon was in. Nevertheless, it’s a good indicator that progress is continuing apace on the upcoming mod.
