Although it wasn’t initially available in the Fallout 76 BETA, the Atomic Shop recently opened for business. Given that this is still the BETA, it seems likely that it is only carrying a limited inventory at present. However, it is nonetheless players’ first experience with Fallout’s new microtransaction system. So, do Bethesda’s reassurances about the Fallout 76 Atomic Shop ring true?
The Fallout 76 Atomic Shop: What Will You Find in its Inventory?
Players who visit the Atomic Shop can purchase items using the in-game currency of Atoms; a separate currency distinct from the more familiar Caps. Atoms can be earned in Fallout 76 in a variety of ways, but small amounts are often given as rewards for accomplishing certain tasks or simply new experiences; some players have found that they received a small amount of Atoms when they first contracted a disease, for instance! At present, players cannot actually purchase Atoms for themselves with real money – the option to do so is greyed out. No doubt this option will open once the game launches fully on the 14th of November.
Representatives of Bethesda have offered repeated reassurances that microtransactions in Fallout 76 will be cosmetic only. So, what can you actually buy at the Fallout 76 Atomic Shop? Unsurprisingly, Pete Hines and Todd Howard weren’t lying about the items available. By and large, they are all cosmetic items of one sort or another. Alternative skins for the C.A.M.P. or structures which you can build appear under one tab, such as the “Clean Purifier.”
Another tab allows players to purchase new emotes, while one offers new poses and frames for the game’s photomode; all content which has no tangible in-game benefit per se. So, players worried about the addition of microtransactions can likely rest easy. There’s no indication that there are anything but cosmetic-style items available for purchase, as Bethesda promised.
