Given how Fallout 76 deviates from Bethesda’s standard RPG model, many fans are understandably unsure about how certain mechanics will work in the game. The studio has had to reiterate on numerous occasions how it will handle PvP and other multiplayer mechanics. Now, Pete Hines has clarified that Fallout 76 loot will have individual, player-specific instances; thus, other players cannot loot your world before you get the chance.
Fallout 76 Loot Will Be “Instanced”
Bethesda’s VP of Marketing, Pete Hines was asked two questions by fans on Twitter today relating to Fallout 76 multiplayer. Firstly, whether players would be competing over the same shared loot, and secondly, whether all players would get loot from a slain monster or just the player who initiated the fight. Succinctly, Hines simply answered “Yes” and “All”.

Hines’ indication then is that Fallout 76 loot will have individual instances per player; i.e. each player will collect loot individually, irrespective of other players. If one player opens a box, or the corpse of a monster, and loots the contents, then that has no bearing on if another player also opens it. They will see, and be able to take, their own loot. This clarification should encourage fans who are unsure about the game’s multiplayer aspect; players won’t be fighting over limited resources shared between a group. Bethesda has already stated that players will be able to trade items with one another, which is likely to be the only way for players to share loot from one player’s instance to another.
Additionally, Hines responded to fan questions about the upcoming B.E.T.A. A fan on Twitter asked whether there was any chance that Bethesda would run a public beta so that players who haven’t preordered the game can get access. At present, the only way to get access to the beta is to preorder a copy of the game. Hines’ answer was very clear.
no. zero chance.
