Fallout 76 Cargobots Seem to Engage in Communal Roosting

If you’ve played much of Fallout 76, you’ve probably seen at least one of the Cargobots; a type of robot which is new to the franchise. These large delivery drones play a role in several quests and public events, and they often drop off rewards for players. Indeed, the Fallout 76 Cargobots also play a role in acquiring nuclear launch codes. However, it seems that they also engage in some unusual behaviours when they’re not actively delivering…

What the Fallout 76 Cargobots Do When They’re Not Out on Delivery

The Fallout 76 Cargobots are part of an automated delivery network which is still partially operational after the Great War. You can use US Government Supply Requisitions to call one in, for example. The drones have no weapons, and their primary role is simply to deliver aid drops. Later in the game, you’ll need to track down a Cargobot during the “Hide and Seek and Destroy” quest. This Cargobot carries a nuclear keycard which is needed to launch nuclear missiles.

Recently, however, a player stumbled upon a group of Cargobots doing something a bit strange. Twitter user “DaMetaEX Aka. Andrew” posted a screenshot of a veritable swarm of Cargobots, milling about in a group somewhere outside of the map’s playable area. It’s rather unclear what they are doing, though their behaviour does rather resemble communal roosting; a behaviour found in many birds.

It seems that the game’s Cargobots may return to this or multiple spots outside of the map when they’re not following their pre-set paths across West Virginia. Presumably, the Cargobots have some sort of schedule to follow, though it could also be a spawning glitch. One player did encounter no fewer than 5 Super Mutant Behemoths in a building where they clearly couldn’t fit, so the latter theory is possible. Perhaps it’s something a developer intentionally put in; a subtle suggestion that the Cargobots aren’t quite as automated as they seem…
