With major league sports shut down right now due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the players and leagues have shifted to video games. That’s been the case for NFL, NBA, and MLB. It will also be the case for Major League Soccer as a new FIFA 20 eMLS tournament was recently revealed online.
FIFA 20 eMLS Tournament bracket details
Major League Soccer will team up with the eMLS for the upcoming tournament to provide some entertainment for sports fans while international football is on hiatus. The FIFA 20 eMLS Tournament Special will run for five weeks and involves 16 teams battling for the sake of charity. These teams consist of eMLS pro-gamers and Major League Soccer players teaming up to represent an MLS squad. Four MLS teams will compete each weekend on FIFA 20.
A bracket was revealed online (below) showing all of the matchups. Weekend 1 has the Chicago Fire’s Francisco Calvo and professional gamer BITW7 (Enrique Espinoza) going against FC Cincinnati’s Kendall Watson and eMLS League Series champion Fiddle. The other matchup has the LA Galaxy’s Chicharito teamed up with pro-gamer Godfather. They’ll take on LAFC’s Adama Diomande and pro-gamer RemiMartinn.
Each weekend’s matchup will feature two legs. In the first leg, the Major League Soccer players go against one another. In the second leg, the eMLS players go head-to-head. The aggregate score from the two legs determines the winner. So in weekend one, two teams will move onto another round and battle, ultimately producing one winning team.
The event is presented by Coca-Cola and PlayStation. Each weekend’s winning team will have a donation made by MLS WORKS and FOX Sports on their behalf to Feeding America.
A final championship round is set to take place in the fifth week of coverage. It will feature all four of the previous weekends’ winning teams battling for the title.
The tournament joins the likes of the recent NBA 2K Tournament won by All-Star Devin Booker and the new MLB The Show Players League that just started last week featuring 30 MLB stars.
When and where to watch the tournament
The FIFA 20 eMLS Tournament will begin on Sunday, April 19 at 7 p.m. Eastern Time with two of the first-round matchups. The event will be televised on Fox Sports 1 (FS1) and FOX Deportes. It will continue each Sunday after that for five weeks.
