The new batch of EA Sports games set to arrive in the coming weeks will be for the current generation consoles. However, several of the games, including EA’s FIFA 21 will become available to play on the next-generation PS5 or Xbox Series X. That’s brought plenty of questions for those who are planning an upgrade from PS4 or Xbox One. However, FIFA developers shed light about FIFA 21 Ultimate Team in terms of next-gen play, transfers, and more.
FIFA 21 Ultimate Team Next-Gen: Cross-Gen Progress, Transfer Markets
When it comes to the next-gen platforms, many gamers were wondering if they can transfer FIFA 21 Ultimate Team progress from current-gen consoles. Based on Q&A and Dexerto’s report, the answer is yes. So that means anyone who starts playing FUT 21 on the PS4 and then gets the PS5, will be able to transfer their progress. The same goes for those who start on Xbox One and get the upgrade on Xbox Series X.
There’s a key detail in their answer, though. That is that gamers need to make sure they have linked up their account to the console they want to play FUT on, once the next-gen is out.
The other interesting answer that arrived during a recent Q&A was with regards to the FUT Transfer Markets. That’s where Ultimate Team gamers can buy and sell various player items for their roster.
Based on the Q&A, developers said that the FIFA 21 Ultimate Team Transfer Market will be cross-gen. That means the Transfer Market should be the same for both the Xbox One and Xbox Series X. The Transfer Market on PS4 and PlayStation 5 should also match up with buying, selling, prices, and other aspects.
Just like previous installments of FIFA, the Transfer Markets won’t match up from PS4 to Xbox One, or PS5 to Xbox Series X, etc. So that doesn’t appear to be something to bank on happening anytime soon.
What about FUT 21 cross-platform play?
One of the big aspects we saw unveiled in the new FUT 21 trailer was that the mode will involve a much more social environment with co-op play. That means friends can team up to compete against others (or each other) online in Ultimate Team. Through that co-op mode, players can complete shared objectives and earn shared rewards.
FIFA Direct Communication indicated in a tweet that friends can’t play co-op together (or vs. each other) if one has a current-gen (PS4/Xbox One) and the other has a next-gen (PS5/XBox Series X) system.
That means friends will need to be on the same type of console to participate in the co-op FUT 21 games. Unfortunately, there’s no PlayStation vs. Xbox for co-op or online competition either.
The new game arrives for the current-gen consoles in Standard Edition on Oct. 9, 2020. Those who pre-order Champions or Ultimate Edition of the game get to play three days earlier.
There’s also the Dual Entitlement Program (see details) for gamers who buy FIFA 21 for the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. They can do a free upgrade of the game if they get the next-gen console (PS5 or Xbox Series X).
All of these details give gamers plenty to contemplate ahead of upcoming console purchases and FIFA 21 Ultimate Team gaming.
