The First Crossover Zombies Mode is Coming in Call of Duty: Vanguard

One of the headline features of the newly-announced Call of Duty: Vanguard is its Zombies mode. Described by Activision as a; “brutal, enthralling experience,” and developed separately by Treyarch, this mode will be the first-ever Zombies mode to crossover with another Call of Duty game.

What to Expect in Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies

Touted as a “franchise-first crossover” by Activision, Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Zombies mode is being developed by Treyarch Studios, while the rest of the game is in development at Sledgehammer Games. In terms of its format, players should expect a relatively familiar experience; Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Zombies mode has been enormously successful, and is likely to define what Vanguard’s mode is like going forward. Indeed, Activision describes the mode as; “innovating on the core gameplay that the mode is famous for,” with no mention of any major gameplay changes.

Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies Mode Crossover 2

In fact, Black Ops Cold War isn’t just setting the gameplay precedent for Vanguard’s Zombies mode. The upcoming mode is actually a direct crossover with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War; it will be opening up a brand-new chapter in its predecessor’s Dark Aether storyline. Dark Aether is the title of the storyline which has spanned the whole Black Ops Cold War Zombies mode, including Onslaught. Of course, Call of Duty: Vanguard takes place in the Second World War, decades before Black Ops Cold War, but keen fans may well remember that Dark Aether’s first map took place in an abandoned WWII-era Nazi research facility…

“Discover the unspeakable horrors of the precursor to Black Ops Cold War Zombies,” writes Activision; “while holding off the relentless onslaught of the undead when Vanguard launches on November 5”. For now, players will have to wait for more details about the upcoming Zombies mode. A more expansive preview is reportedly due to arrive just before Halloween.
