In Norse myth, the dragon Fafnir was once a dwarf whose greed and a cursed ring led to him turning into the fearsome wyrm, before he was ultimately slain by the hero Sigurd. In God of War, however, Kratos’ objective is not to slay the dragon. Instead, you will need to free it, during a Favor called “Flight of Fafnir”.
Three are three dragons which you can free from captivity in Midgard. Freeing them all is the goal of the “Dragon’s Curse” Labor, but freeing each dragon is also its own Favor. The Flight of Fafnir Favor can be undertaken in the Lake of Nine. First of all, head for an unnamed beach which can be found midway between Njord’s Oarsmen and the Alfheim Tower. Look there for some gold rocks and shoot them with a shock arrow. Climb up, and destroy some rocks to clear a path to a chest which contains a Niflheim Cipher Piece and a Realm Tear containing a Dust of the Realms.
Destroying the Dragon Shrines
Climb up to the next area and open the doors ahead of you. Inside, you will get your first look at the imprisoned dragon. Open a nearby chest for some Hacksilver, then turn left. Jump down to the central area, which will be filled with enemy Draugr. Unfortunately, Fafnir will also be breathing lightning at you while you fight, so do your best to avoid his attacks. Once the enemies are defeated, you will be able to destroy the first of three Dragon Shrines, and you can also find a chest beside it.
From the main area, face Fafnir and follow the right-hand wall to a wall you can climb, close to the waterfall. The wall leads to a cave containing Draugr and a Traveller, plus the second Dragon Shrine. Clear out the enemies and destroy the shrine, then go through a gate at the back of the cave. That path will take you back to the area’s entrance.
Return to the main area and turn left, where you will find the third Dragon Shrine protected by a single Draugr. This should be the easiest to destroy. Once you have destroyed it, turn back and climb a wall. Atop it you will find a coffin which holds Solid Svartalfheim Steel and World Serpent Scales, as well as a Lore Marker. Open the gate in the room, and return to Fafnir.
Freeing Fafnir
As you approach, a Realm Tear will appear and release a pair of Heavy Draugr. As you fight them, the Tear will also disgorge a pair of Revenants. Once again, you will also have to avoid Fafnir’s lightning breath. Once the area is cleared, you will be able to free the dragon. This will complete the Favor. You will be rewards with a Rare enchantment called Brilliant Scale of the Chained, as well as XP and a Dragon Tear.
