Fortnite players are causing a bit of a commotion for a video game store in an Ohio mall. It’s called Epic Loot Games, only people happen to think for some reason (maybe they can’t read?) that it’s the very same Epic Games responsible for Fortnite. As such, they’re kind of ruining everyone’s day at the game store, and they should probably knock it off.
Kotaku spoke with Hunter Davies, the assistant manager at Epic Loot Games, and discovered that he takes a slew of verbal abuse over the phone from Fortnite players, as young as 9 to 16 years old, telling him to “fix your f***ing game, fix your servers.” Totally unacceptable. The game’s popularity has attracted a nasty mix of players who, for some reason, think Epic Loot Games and the massive company Epic Games are somehow the same. There’s no phone number to contact Epic Games over Fortnite issues like a customer service line of that nature, and most troubleshooting is done via email. Frustrated players are taking to other lines of support that they think will work, and after some mental gymnastics, are settling on Epic Loot Games as the number they believe they should call.
“A really upset kid called because he said his mom is taking him to counseling because of his anger issues,” said Davies. “He was throwing controllers, cussing people out in the game. I think he got banned. He wanted us to make up for the fact he had to go to a counselor. I tried to genuinely make him understand we weren’t affiliated, but he either didn’t care or was convinced we were the support team, we were brushing him off and we didn’t want to help him.”
Epic Loot Games’ employees are frustrated with the happenings, but they haven’t thought about changing the name or doing anything about the calls they’re receiving on such a regular basis. In fact, many of them, including Davies, act as “bartenders” for the kids who call in about the problems they’re having. It’s bizarre, however, that no one seems to understand that they’re not calling a corporation and are instead calling a toy shop that has nothing to do with the massively popular game.
If you decide to look for some sort of number to call Epic Games, next time just don’t. Customer service lines for the game don’t exist. And don’t call up someone to scream at them because you got yourself banned. They’re just trying to run their business, folks.
