Right now, if you are cruising through the air above the island in Fortnite in an X-4 Stormwing, you can feel pretty safe doing so. If someone manages to destroy your plane, you won’t take any damage. You can just glide away from the exploding plane and resume traversing the landscape in some other fashion. But it looks like that is about to change.
Expect to Take Damage in the Future in Fortnite Planes
Understandably, players have questioned why nobody takes damage when their planes are shot down. After all, it is extremely unrealistic. Plus, it doesn’t seem particularly well-balanced.
In a recent conversation on Twitter, Fortnite Lead Designer Eric Williamson stated that the team is looking into an alternative.
Yes, we’ve discussed a small amount of damage to passengers when a plane is destroyed. Still determining what amount feels fair

User @Nekrospike said, “just to ask if there’s any plans to make it a bad thing to be shot down in a plane? Atm players essentially then get to reposition themselves for a fight or glide away. Perhaps receiving damage upon vehicle explosion OR can only FF/Glide if you bail out before explosion?”
Williamson replied, “Yes, we’ve discussed a small amount of damage to passengers when a plane is destroyed. Still determining what amount feels fair.”
There are arguably some other issues with the planes which still need adjustment as well. User @HVZURD pointed out, “In my opinion the biggest issue with the planes is that you can fly right through builds and you can knock people off of mountains and build offs etc and theres no counter.”
Williamson has not responded to this matter yet. He also has yet to respond to any of the players who have chimed in with suggestions regarding damage. There is quite a bit of contention concerning what is “fair.” So this will not be an easy decision for Epic Games to make.
If there are further updates on the matter of the planes, we will let you know in our Fortnite news area. Let’s hope the team finds a balanced solution.
