Video games featuring disabled characters?
Withywarlock and one other reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
You're absolutely right. I have no interest in playing a character that is confined to a wheelchair. Games need to be an escape. Can anyone imagine if you had to play as a character in TLOU who was in a wheelchair? Or how about Skyrim? I'm willing to bet that both of those games would have flopped instantly. I'm a Family Guy fan. I love the show. But I still don't want to play as Joe Swanson. If he's the only character available to me, then I'll flat out pass. Even those of you who are able-bodied would probably find it at the very best, boring as hell to play someone who wasn't able-bodied. I get enough time in a wheelchair IRL. I don't need it when I let my world vanish when I'm playing a game. Another thing, is that unless the ones that create the game in every last aspect, they could never get any part of it right. They won't be able to script a character that is miserable because they can't walk. They won't be able to show the right kind of anguish on the characters face, or the despair that makes so many commit suicide. I know. I've tried. They don't know what it's like to feel like a complete burden simply because of the chair. And to put all that into a game, simply to have a character in a wheelchair, is not only pointless, but insulting as well.2 points -
Have you ever discovered a new favorite band or composer by gaming?
Heatman reacted to Family sedan for a topic
Yeah, I've been meaning to get more into them. I'll check them out again later today.1 point -
I don't think it's a preference that I'm consciously drawn to, or perhaps there's just more of them, I do tend to play more games that feature a “Chosen One” style protagonist. I guess it's easier to identify with protagonists like Aloy of Horizon Zero Dawn or the Dragonborn of Skyrim because there is something unique about them that makes them (or you) stand out. There's a YouTuber I like that discusses some of these in character analysis of Aloy. You see this in non gaming characters too like Superman, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Avatar Aang/Korra and even villains like Darth Vader. Making them special/chosen makes them unique and interesting. Not that "regular' characters can't be interesting either but it usually takes a deeper dive into their personality in order to make it work.1 point

Most Beautiful Game World?
Reality vs Adventure reacted to Crazycrab for a topic
I'd call it a toss up between Horizon Zero Dawn with it's nature-reclaimed ruins and rugged American landscape and Assassin's Creed Odyssey with it's lovely beautiful sun kissed Greek Isles and impressive Architecture.1 point -
My brain weirdly adjusts to poor graphics

Yeah - it's a very clear fact because there are some you would see and you'd be like did I really played this years ago.1 point -
My brain weirdly adjusts to poor graphics
Family sedan reacted to Withywarlock for a topic
I have a different perspective: if I want to play the game, I'll play it, regardless of its visual state. It might take a few attempts over the course of years, but I'll get there in the end because it'll do something that clicks. And if the graphics are worse and I can still make sense of it, that's the game providing me context through its cohesion. That's one of the greatest compliments I could give a game's graphical fidelity and art style: if I can clearly understand what I'm looking for despite its lower visual quality, and how quickly I did so. There's nothing weird about anyone's enjoyment of a video game, and least of all their visuals. ^^1 point -

NINTENDO SWITCH OLED. opinions?
Sharon reacted to killamch89 for a topic
It's 2021 - how can a mobile device not have Bluetooth? Even the cheapest mobile devices you can think of have Bluetooth and Nintendo shouldn't get a pass on this at all.1 point -
NINTENDO SWITCH OLED. opinions?
killamch89 reacted to Sharon for a topic
Unless there's a crazy trade in deal I don't think I will be picking up the OLED version any time soon. I'm sure it will look beautiful and the sound will probably be better but it's not enough for me to go out of my way to purchase simply because I tend to use the Switch docked anyway. I'm a bit disappointed that a built-in bluetooth option for sound wasn't worked in as that would probably be the nudge that would work for me.1 point -
Do you keep your game cases?
Family sedan reacted to killamch89 for a topic
I do know of a guy that stored his older PS games in one of those CD holders. I mean, it's a decent alternative if you don't have space for the cases but I love reading the manuals and looking at the game art all around the case.1 point -
10 Things You CAN'T RESIST Doing in Single Player Games
Family sedan reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
I turn autosave off on all the games I play that have it, because the fucking thing always interrupts me to let me know that it has saved my god damn game, at the worst time and causes me to get killed or miss out on something extremely important. I hate it just as much as I hate autocorrect, the dirty mother ducking piece of ship.1 point -
10 Things You CAN'T RESIST Doing in Single Player Games

Exactly, it's a reflex with all video games players when it comes to saving. There is no amount of save that would make you to relax and say it's okay not to save again.1 point -
10 Things You CAN'T RESIST Doing in Single Player Games
Family sedan reacted to killamch89 for a topic
Auto Save could be turned on for all I know but I'd still save a million times because it's a habit that I've developed over the course of two decades. I know how unlucky I am in games so I save at every opportunity I get.1 point -

If it leads to knowledge, I would take the new venture. If I was already in a field that dealt with something I loved (like astronomy) then I would stay where I already was. I know I mention the pursuit knowledge all the time on these forums. I do that simply to illustrate how important knowledge is, not only to me, but should be to everyone. I'm a slow learner, but that doesn't mean I should stop trying to educate myself in as many areas as possible.1 point

Would you eat a dead snake or not eat at all for two weeks?
killamch89 reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
That's not what I was getting at, at all. The part of a snake that holds the venom is a direct pocket (shown in the pic below) that is connected to the fangs. It's how they deliver the venom. It's not in any part of the meat. Snakes also can't die from their own venom. Their bodies naturally produce a unique antivenom that keeps from their own hurting them. Another snake of the same species, can kill them with its venom. But if a copperhead bites itself and injects venom into itself the venom will have no effect. While drinking venom is virtually harmless in tiny doses, as stomach acid completely neutralizes it, no sane person would attempt it. Poison can be effective by more ways than ingestion. Poison is a toxin that gets into the body via swallowing, inhaling or absorption through the skin. Venom is a specialized type of poison that has evolved for a specific purpose. It is actively injected via a bite or sting. It's why a lot of people can be killed by one sting from a honeybee. It's not the piercing of skin that hurts, as their stinger is to small to even feel. It's the venom they inject that hurts. But either way, poison or venom, if you don't know what you're doing, I recommend a lot of learning (years upon years worth) before you ever try any of this. Ignorance is one of the deadliest things in the world.1 point -
Would you rather have a dolphin or a kangaroo as a pet?
killamch89 reacted to ZandraJoi for a topic
I love all animals but marine mammals get my vote so I pick dolphin. They are highly intelligent, most definitely. They can have emotions that are similar to humans. A kangaroo, I'd be scared of their kick or their 'boxing' technique.1 point -
10 Things You CAN'T RESIST Doing in Single Player Games

Seriously - The constant thought of did I save my progress and having the urge to save over again and again is innate. You can't really save enough especially if you have auto save turned off.1 point -
Do you keep your game cases?
Family sedan reacted to Heatman for a topic
Of course yes, it's something that I like to keep because it kind affords me a sense of connection to the game whenever I see the case. In fact, there are games it makes me remember and still get back to it.1 point -

Family sedan reacted to Empire for a topic
I have some laying around from back from the day, mostly PS2 and also PC cases games with discs still inside of them 🙂 It's a nostalgia/aesthetic thing... as well as organizational. I can always find my games if they're in boxes with proper cover art.1 point -
Do you find it easy to miss instructions in video games?
killamch89 reacted to Heatman for a topic
This only happens when I get to miss reading these instructions on purpose and it's probably I got some experience with that kind of games, so playing it without worrying about the instructions won't matter.1 point -
Video games featuring disabled characters?
The Blackangel reacted to Crazycrab for a topic
I'm not sure if they even really count. Yeah they might be missing an arm or whatever but most of them have artificial limbs or implants that if anything make them stronger. That's kinda sums up the problem with disabled characters in games. For the sake of gameplay you want to feel empowered not restricted. I'm all for diversity in games but, and I'm sure @The Blackangel will testify to this, it ain't fun being disabled in real life so it won't be fun in a game either.1 point -

Games you were excited for that never made it out of development
Withywarlock reacted to Shagger for a topic
I was really exited to see the game Deep Down from Capcom announced with the PS4. It looked great and it was coming from a Capcom that was starting to get thier act together after something of a rough patch. The PS4 launched, Capcom had some serious financial woes at least partially brought on by the mistakes they made and a lack of consumer confidence then the game just faded out of existence. 8 years later, and I'm still pissed.1 point
