  1. I was inspired to create this thread by something that I saw whilst updating the Free Games with Epic Update Thread and... well... we'll get to that. Anyway, this is to discuss Video Game Cover Art. What you think is good cover art, bad cover art, interesting, dull, funny or just plain weird. I also want people to say what they think masks good cover art, what covert art needs to do to work. Anyway, like I said, I was inspired to create this thread by something that I saw whilst updating the Free Games with Epic Update Thread and seen one of the games upcoming to the service and I have never been more lost for words looking at... quite frankly, anything in my life. I mean, what the hell am I looking at here? There's sloth with a bleach blond "Trump" parting behind a thumb with a face minus the nose with massive tumours all over it. Somewhere, there is a man with a tranquilizer gun and a big net looking for whoever it was that deigned this nightmare fuel, and we'd better hope that he finds them. I'll try wash that out with some good box art. Street Fighter 2 I love this because it's such a good still of action. Ryu has just been knocked over by Blanka, but hasn't landed yet, Chun-Li is extending her leg to counter Blanka, but looking you can't be sure if she'll do so in time. Even the trash can in the background that hasn't quite fallen over really helps add to this image's sense of motion. And look at that sinister grin on Blanka's face, he knows what he's doing! Also, is it just me, or does Blanka's skin look a lot darker than it is in the game? I don't know, maybe they did that because they're in dark ally or something. Either way, it get's the point across. This game is about action, but also something supernatural as well. The detail is great, the shading is incredibly well done with great use colour and negative space. Another good one would be the original Doom It looks like the cover of an 80's thrash metal album. Enough Said. Bad ones? Well, other than than Paradigm that I'm just gonna class as bizarre, I'm gonna go for the original Mass Effect Great game, don't get me wrong, but actually stopping and looking at this box art the fact I'm struggling to think of things to say kind of summarises what's wrong with this. It's uninspired and it's boring. If the words "Mass Effect" could be replaced by the title of a sci-fi B-movie from the late 90's-early 2000's and you probably wouldn't recognise it at first. It's just not distinctive. Unlike the Street fighter 2 and Doom box arts that both inform you and excite you for what's coming in the game, that doesn't sell Mass Effect at all. Yes, the sci-fi theme is nailed down, but what else? It's static, it's dark and it's dull. They play it too safe, really. The future titles improve in this regard, but not by much. So, let's have your input.

  2. I know that many of you have been expressing frustration over how "spammy" (for lack of a better word) some sections of the forum are becoming by a handful of people using the threads more like a chat. The forum gets flooded with off-topic posts on threads that really should have long since died but keep getting bummed because some people feel compiled to reply to them with anything. This thread is not about pointing fingers or blame, it is just about how to better organise the forum so that the threads can be more welcoming for the whole community. So people can post, for example, without worrying about there posts getting bummed down by people posting barley relevant, low value replies just to up posts counts. Four possible idea come to me. A "shitposting" sub forum for people to, well, "shitpost". A thread for memes, jokes and other irrelevant dribble to have fun with without impacting other areas of the forum. A re-focus on forum games. Upping post counts is essentially what these types of threads are for, but almost nobody on VGR tends to use them. For this to work, it would necessitate a change of habit that, to be honest, I don't really see happening, so I'm less sure about this one. A chat box added to the forum itself. This works well in theory, but could be difficult and time consuming to implement, not to mention hard to monitor and moderate, which is why I'd personally prefer... Opening a VGR Discord server. As well as a place for live chat, it would also open up the community to the opportunity to group up and actually play games together. Now, @DC, I remember we have had this discussion before and you didn't want to do this because you feared it would move traffic off the website, and I truly understand that, but this CAN be run and moderated in such a way that it would work, and may even attract new people to VGR. Still, that is just one man's thoughts. If you have anything to add or if you want to push one of these ideas, reply below.

  3. Have you ever encountered a game-breaking bug that you could not work around on that playthrough? What did you do? Did you shelve the game forever? Wait for a patch and try again later? Replay on a different platform?

  4. The in-game ads are expected to launch by the end of the year and would appear in inconspicuous places within the game, like billboards. Players could also get rewards for watching advertisements, and the ads would be sold through a private marketplace, Insider reports. Sources told Insider that Sony hasn’t yet decided if it would take a portion of ad revenue but is considering having developers and publishers pay for consumer data. According to reports, both Sony and Microsoft plan to introduce ads in games this year Thoughts?

  5. Those are some cool ones. What is there not to like about that Street Fighter 2 art? Blanka's face is right in the center and if all you saw was his face, it would tell all. Doom has that red Mars color and I like how they added that bit of green brain splatter and the one in the front turned around looking at us is creepy. I can see how The Walking Dead may have inspired that. I had no idea The Walking Dead comic was out in 1989 by Aircel. Warhammer I have a hard time seeing what's going on there because of the colors I think. I just know I wouldn't want to try to break up that fight. Here are some of my pics for the moment. I have always enjoyed the cover art of Days Gone and something about it just screams to me as a favorite. He's just chilling by his bike, his lifeline pretty much. And all that chaos on the horizon, he's just like 'shit I'm ready, let's do this.' It's a beautiful place and can't I have just one moment to enjoy it? Next one I've always liked is Dr Muto. I have a fascination with science stuff and this is classic weird science!!! The Simpson's Hit and Run screams chaotic fun!!! That's the art Grand Theft Auto should look like. 😄 Now for the BAD Sorry Resident Evil fans. Great series and all, but all the cover art is super basic!!! It doesn't really say much Resident Evil 8: To me it looks like a face of pain. Is it horror? War? Drama? Psychotic breakdown? Resident Evil 7: It's scary looking house. How many times have we seen a pic of a scary house? It does look creepy, but it doesn't give an essence of a gaming environment. More like, you walk into a house and then what? Resident Evil 6: That doesn't really look scary to me and looks more like a band of mercenaries going to fight terrorists. Resident Evil 5: They didn't even try with that one

  6. Nice picks. In the case of the Doom one, that sort of imagery is used a lot. It might've been inspired by AirCel Comics' The Walking Dead back in 1989: ~ Starting with the weird is Croc! Pau Pau Island, the Japanese version of Croc! Legend of the Gobbos. Japan has some interesting ideas for cover art to say the least, especially in the early days of 3D video games. One such example is this: Croc and his Gobbo friends staring aimlessly juxtaposed on a stock image of an island. Given that the game doesn't feature palm trees, the one they're on can't be Pau Pau Island, because 'Pau Pau' is Japanese for 'Gobbo'. Next up is my pick for the good. Warhammer: Battle March, back when Games Workshop were still openly interested in Warhammer Fantasy, whereas now they begrudgingly continue their Age of Sigmar line while video gamers continue to enjoy the original IP. Battle March is the original Mark of Chaos game with Greenskin DLC, as shown here where a Warrior of Chaos and Orc Boy are duking it out. Warhammer artwork always shows these close victories between two forces. Who will win this one? The agent of the Ruinous Powers, or the equally chaotic newcomer to the fray? Finally is the plain ol' bad. Rascal wasn't a good game, and it was below average at best. It's an easy target for the 'meme review format' but its too old to make jokes about that weren't already made themselves. The cover art is one such joke: a boy who's trying to be hip and cool with a plunger gun fending off bubbles filled with angry faces. Is it any wonder it didn't do well?

    Gun Control

I want to point out first that I'm a gun owner. I have several. .22 mag double barel .25 semi-automatic .38 special revolver .380 semi-automatic 2 - .9mm one double barrel .40 semi-automatic .45 semi-automatic .357 mag revolver AR-15 And several hunting rifles. That out of the way, I agree the 2nd amendment needs to be updated. What was relevant 250 years ago, isn't relevant today. Things change. You have to keep up with the change. No why do I own these guns? I have owned guns all my life. I got my first one when I was 5, which was a .22 that had belonged to my grandfather. I was taught how to use a gun, to respect, and to treat ALL guns as if they were loaded. It doesn't matter if you know it's not loaded, you still treat it as if it is. I have 2 main reasons for owning all these guns. For home protection. I have lived in some heavy crime areas, and don't take chances anymore. I've also had some things happen here at my house where I live now. I don't fuck around. Target shooting. I enjoy getting some targets, and popping off a few rounds at them. I do the same thing with a slingshot, which BTW is also a laser sighted slingshot. I took a hunters safety course when I was 13 and was the only one in the class who passed it with a perfect score. A couple years ago, I took the CCW class, and passed it with a perfect score as well. Which means I'm licensed to carry a concealed firearm. I carry the .380 in my purse, and the .357 on my hip. I know how to use the weapons, but won't unless I have no other choice. The .357 being a revolver, I have no choice but to have it fire ready. The .380 however, while the clip is full, there is no round in the chamber. Unless I'm about to fire it, there never will be a round in the chamber. I keep my weapons clean, and I keep them ready. But above all else, I keep them safe.

  8. If you are looking for a good game to play on your new PS4, then what I will unequivocally recommend for you would be The Last Of Us Part II. Play it and thank me later, I don't need to say much about the game.

    Milestone Thread

I have Witcher 3 on Switch, and it's pretty smooth on the system. I've encountered no glitches in it, but I haven't played it a whole lot, because it's just not getting its hooks into me. @Rain Dew's dog chewed up my Switch so I'm going to have to start playing it on Xbox until I get a new Switch. Good thing I have it on more than one console.

I think it was Bender in the episode of Futurama "The Bots and The Bee's" he said: That pretty much sums up how I feel. I drink beer but I'm more of a spirit's man.

That's alright. You can always play any game at any time whenever you're ready to get it. It's why I love games. It's not a must to play it immediately it's out.

  27. As the OP I feel I need to step in. The same points are getting repeated and were starting to drift a little off topic. This is about Sony's current and potential future acquisitions. I'm not saying the latest points about monopolisation and competition are totally off the rails but the points have been made several times. I would appreciate it if future posts could contribute with a new point or at a new perspective of current points.

It's been a long while with Fuji speed way, it dates back from 1996 made in Japan, I just checked that now. I didn't see the options which gaming devices it is compatible with, but I know it wouldn't be available for new gen gaming devices. So, @Heatman which platform did your brother played it on?

  30. Age doesn't mean much to the kind of games one plays. It's more or less what adds fun in your life but I do understand your point about getting into something more mature for your age.

  31. It would be Gran Turismo for me especially the 6th edition of the game. After that, I'm going to pick Forza Horizon as my next favorite.
    1 point
  32. I'm not so sure about that. If somebody does a painting of a view that includes, let's say, a country house or a a landmark, the owners of that landmark can't claim to own that painting. I see a similar issue with game developers claiming ownership of works created using a photo mode, not to mention it would be terrible PR and probably not very economical to bring to court anyway.

  33. Tough one because there are some great racing games out there. But it would probably have to be Forza Horizon or F1 for me. It's hard for me to pick one out of the two I have mentioned since they are quite different. But Forza Horizon is amazing for a more arcade-like experience and then if you're in the mood for F1, that has a more realistic approach to racing which is quite fun

Wrong, they can work without them. If these game couldn't work without the adds, why would it possible to spend money to stop the adds coming up, which is exactly what these adds are deigned to harass you into doing?

  35. If i speak from nostalgia i have to say super monaco gp one and two on the sega megadrive/genesis. I still try to play trough the second game atleast once a year. Can't really say i have one favourite series but if i have to choose probably going to pick forza motorsport, the 4th being the highlight of the series. Maybe that changes if they release forza 8 this year or the next let's hope it does. I always had a lot of fun with the test drive unlimited series, they were cringy at best and the handling of the care were quite awfull but it did so much things that were new at the time nobody really cared about that. Sure i have nothing agains gran turismo and i had put many hours into the series but i feel like the series has been in a downward spiral after the 4th entry. GT 6 was quite good but nobody played that since by the time it got released, the ps4 was already out and people already moved on. GT7 With the recent micro transaction bullshit i don't know man, going to keep my hands away from that game for quit a while.
