VGR Member of the Month - June 2022 Nominations
The Blackangel and 4 others reacted to Withywarlock for a topic
I should say that Heatman is correct, and I do thank him for remembering that (though do free up that brain space for something more important ๐ ). I was going to post but Clasher changed their nomination before I could clarify. I also didn't want to make a post here to say "don't nominate me" as I felt it was meaningless, but I say this now to ease what I perceive to be tensions brewing. But I'll say again as it has been a while: please do not waste your nominations on me. Previously this was because it would be a violation of my code of ethics to potentially receive cash prizes being offered at the time, but my reasoning now is because meaningful conversation is reward enough for being here.5 points -

Top 5 "must do" things on VGR
The Blackangel and one other reacted to Clasher for a topic
1. I will mention in my article that VGR is a good community where you can get many of your game related questions answered or discussed about. 2. It's moderators are always on the watch to put you on the right track incase you derial or experience a difficulty. 3. Members of VGR as game lovers as yourself and are always willing to interact with you and give you a piece of their own thoughts incase you need some clarity about a video game. 4. At VGR you can loosen up and let others know about your Gaming Passions without been judged. I think these are my top four other points would come in between what I mentioned.2 points -
The conversation has moved too far away from what it was supposed to be about. Nobody's talking about "When they started their Fortnite journey" and are instead discussing microtransactions. This is one of these kinds of topics where you can only really answer the opening post once (if at all), then after there is little reason to post again other than in reply to somebody else's story, and I can't see a reason why that conversation would get very far either. The only thing that can be done to keep this thread going is to bring things into the conversation that don't belong, and that is exactly what has happened here. This was reported to the moderators by another member, and on the back of that report and for the reasons explained above, this thread will now be locked.2 points

Why are release windows/dates announced so late for some games?
killamch89 and one other reacted to Shagger for a topic
I think announcing release dates close to said release date, no more than 4-5 months maximum beforehand, is exactly what every game publisher and/or developer should do. I spoke about it before on VGR, but I'll say it again for those who missed it. Game companies want to announce release dates as early as possible so they can start taking pre-orders a quickly as possible. Remember, these companies want all the money and the want it yesterday, so taking people's money and giving them literally nothing back is the ultimate goal. Taking in that money then actually coming out with a game at all is, to them, a compromise. Unless your Star Citizen, in which case you literally have taken hundreds of millions of dollars of your fans money and given them nothing but a bare bones, broken alpha to "play". Getting back to it. Some games make their release announcements close to year in advance to get those pre-sales, but there is no way that company in question can be certain that a game would ready that far in advance. It's just too early in the game's development to know at that point. It's almost inevitable that the schedule they have set out doesn't actually work out that way, forcing them into that choice to delay a game or release it busted. This is exactly what happened to Cyberpunk2077. CDPR announced game's release date in June 2019 at E3 to be April 16nth 2020, a full 10 months later. They foolishly announced the date at this time because the world was watching, again to maximise the amount pf pre-orders and hype they could generate. There was no way CDPR knew with any degree of certainty they could make that date when they announced it. And of course, as we know, they didn't. The game was delayed to September, then November until the game finally came out in December, a year and a half after announcing the release date. To cap it all off, the game still came out busted, a fact CDPR even tried to cover up, resulting is a PR disaster for them. If they just waited until a point where they knew the game was going to be ready before announcing that release date, that whole mess could have been avoided. Game companies can't seem to help themselves, though. Cyberpunk 2077 is hardly an isolated incident. Similar things, although maybe not as extreme, happen all the time.2 points -
The thread is about somebody that isn't you or @Heatman seeking recommendations for (preferably console) RTS games, it's not for you two to go back and forward and discuss Age of Empires. Letting this go from you two will inevitably lead to thread derailed and end up only belonging to you two's little chat alienating anyone looking to talk about the threads original subject manner. I've been here long long enough to know what @Heatman in particular is like. He can't help but get himself caught up in these things then before we know it, were 5 pages on and it's the same handful of people dancing around the same points over and over. So no, you were not on topic, this was a chat between yourselves. I've seen too many threads on VGR ruined by people doing this. I know you aware of the issues discussed in this thread, well this is how they start. With people saying something then somebody making a quoted response then it all just dissolves into a text chain between the same two or three people, and we have had enough of it on VGR. And before you accuse me of being overbearing, let me tell you this was not my action alone. This was in fact in was in response to another member who saw what was starting happen and reported it. So when I say we have had enough of it on VGR, I really do mean literally WE have had enough of it on VGR. Not me, we. So if you don't mind, when I issue you simple instruction like this in future, please just do as your told.2 points

For the love of.... What the hell were they thinking? They sold off games they were making bank on.... to focus on NFT's? What the hell does Square Enix expect to do with this? Selling nonexistent items for real money? I've heard some dumbass ideas in my 40 years on this planet, but if this one doesn't top them all, it's pretty damn close.2 points

Most of us started playing video games as a hobby which is very common with all of us. Some started and used it a way of disconnecting from the real world and enter into the fantasy world. While started playing and turned it into their professional career and even make enough money through it. Along the line of gaming, we all get to the point where we get hooked up so bad that it might even be bad for our health. I'm throwing it out in the open right now to know the level you think it would get before you consider it being an addiction and it needs to be corrected sooner than later?1 point

Iโve learned to appreciate the loudness of my gaming laptop fan
killamch89 reacted to StaceyPowers for a topic
At first, I could not stand the loudness of my gaming laptop fan. But now I realize every time it โrandomlyโ gets loud when I am not gaming, it is because stuff is updating. Now I actually appreciate knowing this, so I wonโt overtax my system when updates are hogging resources.1 point -
I sadly have not yet played with a VR headset, I really want to, but the cost of it is just out of my reach at the moment. Anyway, I was curious how you guys, those who have played with an actual VR headset, felt when using one? Like, how long can you wear it until it starts to cause you to feel sick, or have a headache or other issues? I hear some people can't handle playing VR for a long period of time, and even some VR headsets recommend taking a break after a while because it can be disorienting for some. But, what is your experience with gaming on VR for long periods of time. Do you get fatigue gaming for too long? Maybe eye strain or headaches?1 point

Good day, I finished Super Mario 64 after decades and it's awesome to see how smooth the gameplay is, the level design holds attention, the songs stick to the head and even with old graphics the game doesn't look bad. This is one of those classics games that leaving the graphics aside is really good game even in today standards, awesome game.1 point

Head_Hunter reacted to DC for a topic
I want to congratulate and thank each of you for contributing to 150,000 posts on VGR forum! This is a huge milestone, and it is hard to believe we accomplished it so soon after we hit 100,000 posts late last year. I am so proud not only of how active our community is, but how much quality and consistency we have maintained over the years. While VGRโs membership has grown, we retain a tight-knit core of dedicated members who continue to engage in compelling, thoughtful dialogue, and who support each other as part of an inclusive and welcoming community. Thank you all again for all you have done to make VGR forum a top destination for discussing video games online. As always, if you have any questions or suggestions about VGR, please feel free to post here to contact me via private message.1 point -
That's right. TESII: Daggerfall re-imagined in Unity engine is now available completely free on PC from GOG. To get the game on GOG, click here. GOG link It is possible to claim the game on Steam as well, but is a bit more of a hassle. You need to claim the original game on Steam (Find it here. It is also free.) then download the updated version from the Daggerfall Workshop Website then install it like it were a mod. Check the site for full details.1 point

Do you believe men and women can ever just be friends?
DC reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
I guess I know where I stand with you now.๐ But I do have to disagree. I have been friends with men in the past. They weren't interested in me and I wasn't interested in them. I'm sure that if I had offered, they would have been willing to jump into bed with me, simply because I'm female. But I wasn't a whore. Also I'm not into men. But being friends is sometimes difficult when there's the possibility of sexual tension in the situation. but as long as everyone knows the other persons boundaries (and respects those boundaries), then it should be fine.1 point -
Top 5 "must do" things on VGR
killamch89 reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
1) All aspects of gaming are in discussion here, which means that there is no shortage of knowledge. 2) The forum is well organized, and easy to search. 3) It's a very laid back atmosphere. You can poke fun at each other and no one takes it to heart. 4) It's a very welcoming place unlike many other forums. 5) Unlike other forums, the owner offers auctions to win prizes.1 point -

Do you believe men and women can ever just be friends?
DC reacted to killamch89 for a topic
I totally understand your mindset bro and at least you're transparent about your intentions when dealing with the opposite sex unlike others who will "befriend" these women trying to get into bed with them and will strike at a moment when they're vulnerable. As long as you're honest about your intentions when dealing with others, I can't sit here and knock you for that.1 point -
Do you believe men and women can ever just be friends?
killamch89 reacted to DC for a topic
All good. My perspective is always negatively received by my peers. I use to have a lot of platonic friends when I was younger and do agree that it is likely healthy to have friendships with the opposite sex but it's become more challenging for me as I have grown older and incurred more responsibilities. Perhaps this viewpoint is influenced by me being an introvert and also having trouble with superficial conversations and lack of continuity.1 point -
RTS games for beginners? Preferably available on consoles
Yaramaki reacted to Withywarlock for a topic
Frostpunk's good once you get to grips with it. It takes some practice, maintaining people's happiness with the energy required to keep the different buildings running. Like a lot of city management games it's easy to lose control; one moment you think it's safe to expand and all of a sudden it becomes difficult to provide the energy required to keep your people from migrating or dying of cold. I recommend it. It's one of the few RTS that didn't have much of a competitive scene, and its one meta (Warthog Rush) got tiring so quickly that the playerbase dropped it. As for its sequel, I couldn't speak to that but I hear it's everything the first game does but better. I didn't realise C&C was underappreciated, I've always heard it's the RTS to play. Still, you appear to be more knowledgeable about it than me. RTS isn't really my thing I'm afraid.1 point -
I love you @DC, but I could not agree with you less. I may even agree with that less than anything I've ever seen posted on VGR. Not only is it very possible to have healthy, fulfilling plutonic relationships with the opposite sex, I'd go so far to say it's important to do so. It can't be a good thing to look at the opposite sex and only see someone to potentially have a romantic or sexual relationship with. I actually shudder to think how somebody would turn out without it. At the very least it offers an insight and opportunity to learn things about the opposite sex that you can't get any other way, even from a romantic relationship. Not to mention how many happy couples exist out there that start of as friends, so I cannot see the drawback here, like at all.1 point

Time sink games?
NightmareFarm reacted to Withywarlock for a topic
The first game I felt time fly by with was Dragon Age: Origins. Seven hours had passed and it'd only felt like three, and I only knew that because my dad got home from work and I was shocked he'd got back so soon. However lately I've found a lot of management games eat up my time. Stellaris in particular is great to have on in the background while I talk to my girlfriend over Facebook, and Civilisation is notorious for its "one more turn" addictiveness. It's those games where there's always one more button to press, one more widget to spin, and one more lever to pull that make time fly. I have to agree with you about JRPGs; when I'm into them, I'm really into them - just one more story beat, just one more random encounter, just one more item... it's amazing how simple and effective their pull can be.1 point -

What games would you like to see โremakesโ of like TLOU?
killamch89 reacted to Reality vs Adventure for a topic
But what is it that makes TLOU remake special? I obviously love the series and no doubt will buy the remake, but that's basing it on 2 previous masterpieces. I'm not sold that its such a grand remake considering the original was already a GOTY and near perfection. I'm excited about Saints Row remake since the first game was an Xbox 360 exclusive and the rest of the series was made for the 360/ps3 generations. So this August will be a very exciting remake of one of the most fun series I've played. There isn't a set release date for Layers of Fears, but recently found out about it. I can't really call it a remake, but in a way it is. This is the first I've heard of a developer combining a non continuity series into one game. Only brilliance can pull this off which if any developer can then its gotta be Bloober Team. Basically they are layering 2 series and a DLC into a single game. They will probably add new stuff too; I have to stay informed of updates on that. Assassin's Creed titles from 1-4 all need remakes using a lot of the same innovations from modern AC games like flying around an eagle all around Italy or the Caribbean. As well as upgraded scenery, fighting, gameplay, taming animals etc. PLEASE REMAKE!!!1 point -

My vote is for one of our newer members @Grungie. Not gonna lie, it's unlikely that you'll agree with everything he has to say, but with the amount of thought for quality and foresight and the amount of himself he puts into what he posts, that warrants respect. So despite a couple of rough moments in these early stages, I'm glad to see him here. It's hard to explain, but I felt like this forum needed you @Grungie, so welcome.1 point -

@Yaramaki I understand your suggestion. I am going to brainstorm a solution where users who have made X amount of MEANINGFUL posts and/or have been a member at VGR for X amount of time period have the ability to edit posts for more than 10 minutes. Basically this feature would only be available to those who are considered valued contributors of the forum (which I would categorize you in).1 point

There's enough people on here who don't speak English as a first language, but still post legibly albeit with some errors. Sadly, there is also enough people who post content that's hard to understand because they don't care and are only interested in getting as many posts done as possible. Let me tell you from experience it is very easy to tell the difference. Posts that you and the other members is who don't speak English as a first language are still understandable. A few minor grammatical errors and spelling mistakes isn't going to bug anyone. It is perfectly acceptable and isn't actually what makes there "other" people's post hard to read. It's more about thier post being structured badly and convoluted because it's the act of someone typing in a rush. The act of someone who hasn't thought it through and obviously doesn't proof read anything before posting it. I believe that you make fantastic posts, and you do, because you take your time. Just because the reason you take your time is because of language difficulties, doesn't change the positive effect it has. Hell, even as a native English speaker I can take just as long as you on a post because I'm a horrible typist and make errors all the time, but taking the time I need to get it good enough, just like you do, helps a great deal. You should have seen the mess this very post would have been if I hadn't gone back... twice. I know you're disappointed that your request didn't gather the support you hoped in this this early stage (Ultimately, it's up to @DC, not me or anyone else, so you should not get discouraged anyway), but I can't be anything else but honest and I think that this is a fix for something that isn't broken. Give yourself a little credit, like I said the quality of the content you put on VGR from the very start has been superb. I could be convinced to champion for the edit window to be extended a little bit, maybe to 15 minutes, but I can't get behind 30 minutes, I'm sorry.1 point
-
Would it be possible to extend the time you can edit your posts for a little longer, i think it's 15 minutes now if my memory doesen't fail me it's kind on the short side especially if you're post are on the longer side? I'm always too late whenever i feel like i should have added something in or i see a big grammer error, could have phrased something better.1 point
-
This is just about as short sighted and idiotic a move I've seen from a major game company. For us as the gamers I can't say for sure whether that will be a good or a bad thing, but Square Enix will regret this. Somebody really didn't think this through. It is at least a promising situation for IP's like Legacy of Kain to have new games that might not have happened.1 point

How do you prioritise aspects of a video game?
Dannyjax reacted to NightmareFarm for a topic
I lump performance in with presentation. I prioritise 60fps(even if it's a shaky uncapped 60fps) over 30fps. However gameplay is what ultimately comes first to me unless the frame rate is like 20fps or below which makes it unplayable.1 point -
