Was actually going to post the same to stay ontopic but @Withywarlock beat me to it. This thread has run it's course i guess, unless somebody who is a parent with kids old enough to play videogames here wants to chim in and share their own experiences? I'd love to hear them if you are willing to post them as maybe we could learn a thing or two along the way.2 points

How old to start gaming?

Thinking of writing my own book
StaceyPowers and one other reacted to The Blackangel for a topic
I've written 2 full length novels, several short stories, and a hell of a lot of unconventional poetry. That said, I can offer some advice. I assume you're writing fiction? The first sentence of every story is always the hardest. After that let the story write itself. Never force it. You have to have that itch to get back to writing it. But before you get too far you need to think about a few things. 1) Is it a narrative? 2) Are the characters relatable? 3) What kind of conflict will they be dealing with? 4) Is it told through eyes of a certain character? 5) Have you written a description of all the characters yet? 6) Do you know where you want to go with the story? Have you thought about the beginning, middle, and end separately so you know what you want to tell the reader? 7) Is it engaging enough to keep a person reading? 8.) Can you describe what your story is about to someone who asks? 9) Are you writing just as a hobby, or are you thinking about publishing? 10) Can YOU relate to your characters? For example in my first book, the main character was based off of me. We share a lot of the same attitude and view of the world. The only difference is that my character in that story is male, and I'm female. If you need more just ask and I'll help as much as I can. As a note to what @Withywarlock said, one of my books is currently on its 8th draft ans the other is on its 7th. More drafts will follow. Until it's perfect in my eyes, it will keep getting edits and rewrites. So don't get discouraged if you go to 7, 8, or 100 drafts. If you don't like it where it is, no one else will either.2 points -

This means DRM style safeguards for your games. Honestly I don't see an issue with this when it comes to digital games. I also have no issue with it if it's to stop people from using fake game carts or stolen ones. I just hope this doesn't result in games becoming one time use. I don't think that would be the case. I think with this it makes sense for the Switch, because it's not like they are looking for people who sell their games. I think they genuinely want to stop people from illegally duplicating the game or finding ways of sharing it. Yes, generally the game is good. There's no doubt about it. It's only on the part of its time travel mechanics that it didn't live up to expectations. I believe that they can do better in the next release if they are planning on one.1 point

Don't Hug Me I'm Scared
Gonassis reacted to Withywarlock for a topic
Thanks for sharing this one, Techno. This'll be something else for my partner and I to collectively cack our khakis to, hopefully with laughter rather than terror. Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared is a comedy horror series on YouTube. It's meant to be like children's television shows with puppets, but it's juxtaposed by the horror elements such as disturbing imagery, discordant music and creepy writing. While I do appreciate you asking for context, I recommend you use Google first to find things out and then make a post. This isn't a telling off, just advice for all users so we don't clog up the pages. ^^1 point -
Breeding of human/pig hybrids in Texas
Gonassis reacted to Reality vs Adventure for a topic
There is a concerning rate of human pig hybrid birthrates in Texas with genetic swaps due to living in very similar habitats. They actually have cross bred with pigs and now are able to carry the DNA successfully into their own offspring. There is a new heart transplant that has taken place by using the heart of a human/pig hybrid and replacing that into a human. The procedure was a success and now scientists are looking more closely into the Texas communities that are predominantly these human pigs. This is quite fascinating because while the human species has devolved in intelligent capacity, the pig DNA has evolved into more intelligent pigs. Together, they aren't quite as intelligent as the homo sapiens, but with this research we can learn much more about pig mentality and how they communicate. Here are a few photos of the human/pig hybrids. As you can see, the birth rate has increased with more to a litter.1 point -
Alright so there's this TV show that's coming out and I found out the release date before everyone else.1 point

Oh for fucks sake! Denuvo is useless! Customers (especially on PC) know it's useless, developers know it's useless, even publishers know it's useless. the only reason anybody uses it is so say they can claim that they are doing something about the money their not loosing to piracy. Denuvo is usually cracked within 24 hours and even if it isn't, the customer base that do have a legit copy that they paid for have to suffer. This is without considering the hypothesis that piracy doesn't actually loose these companies any profit. Think about it, if you would rather go through the hassle of downloading a cracked version of a game that probably has tonnes of adware bollocks then you obviously weren't willing to buy the game in the first place! For game publishers piracy is an enemy that doesn't exist.1 point
-
Denuvo is the worst thing you can have with your games. Not only it not do what it's suppose to do as it's get's cracked every time, it can and has caused massive performance issues, sometimes costing 20fps. By using such infamous and hated third party DRM it paints a bullseye on your games, thus actually making your games more vulnerable to being hacked and pirated, so it makes it worse for everyone. On PC it's bad for performance, but on what's already an underpowered console is recipe for disaster.1 point

Anti-Piracy Software Denuvo Announced for Switch
killamch89 reacted to Withywarlock for a topic
Denuvo and other DRM has been known to cause performance issues such as frame-rate drops and loading time problems, however negligable. These issues are mostly experienced on PC especially with older hardware, and while I give more credit to the Switch than others regarding its hardware capabilities, it still needs all the resources it can get. It doesn't need to be bogged down further by DRM. It offers no benefit to the customer and at worst it means the pirates get the better experience because the game's performance isn't compromised. It's highly unlikely that it will: see this exhaustive list of cracked games from four years ago. There's been a lot more games with Denuvo since, and a lot more cracks since then. The hardest games to break open are those with additional DRM, such as VM Protect & Uplay, which Ubisoft employs... meaning Denuvo on its own doesn't work. For physical games, I'm not so sure, but I imagine those who want in will find a way in and then share it online. Regarding carts being stolen I'd love it if Denuvo had a way of returning carts to their rightful owners. It's a shame it doesn't, and this is Nintendo's first step to harming the idea of swapping games or selling them used. I get the appeal of cracking down on emulators for the current console, I find the practice abhorrent when Switches are available, affordable for what they are, and there's plenty of copies of games new and used. The developers and publishers can still make money on them, unlike say a Nintendo 64. Shigeru Miyamoto isn't getting a penny for a copy of Super Mario 64 sold on eBay, but he could for Super Mario Odyssey bought new from GAME (well, that's not entirely how it works but the sentiment is the same.) I wish I had your optimism. Very rarely is DRM removed for the legitimate purchasers once it's demonstrated the anti-piracy measures to have failed, meaning we can have goodbye to many games that end their publishing agreements and licenses. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. I agree with you entirely but I want to highlight this particular line. Discourse on piracy, especially from developers and publishers, is rarely truthful let alone useful. According to sexual harrassment apologist and Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemont, PC has a 93-95% piracy rate... which means their DRM is effective 5-7% of the time. Whatever the real figures are (which they can't know anyway), they haven't really lost a sale because it's unlikely that many pirates are the 'ethical' kind who use it as a demo first. I hope Nintendo have been paying attention but again I have not one iota of faith.1 point -

White Supremacists Infiltrating the Republican Party
NightmareFarm reacted to Reality vs Adventure for a topic
The answer is obvious now if it wasn't already before that republicans have now openly endorsed white supremacy. After the latest mass shooting in Buffalo, NY, where a white guy targeted blacks at a store, dressed in armor, and went on a shooting spree. He also had a racist manifesto and white supremacist belief of the Great Replacement Theory. So now we are at a crossroads where schools are being punished for the accusations of Critical Race Theory and widespread banning of books including math, termination for discussing racism, violence against school boards, and even proposals to jail librarians. On the other hand you have a major media outlet fox news, congress members and other politicians, and domestic terrorism that all promotes Great Replacement Theory. And even after the terrorist shooting in Buffalo, politicians and Fox are still pushing the Great Replacement Theory. Democrats are now proposing gun laws and domestic terrorism laws. Democrats are calling for republicans to denounce the terrorist act and the great replacement theory and they won't do it. Instead, they are amplifying it by republican politicians and by Fox news, more specifically by Tucker Carlson. Basically, republican whites ban awareness of history and racism in schools, while endorsing their own victimhood how they believe diversity is the elimination of whites and immigrants are meant to replace their vote. So in other words, ban immigration, ban every race related issue in schools, pass into law voting suppression and racist gerrymandering, then promote the Great Replacement Theory. I could easily say that the Replacement Theory is what whites are doing to minorities in this country. White nationalistic views are to build a wall at the border and stop immigration and deport any and all legal residents from any non European country. ICE, Immigration Customs Enforcement, is even in the news lately for their unchecked surveillance on Americans. The Great Replacement Theory has now suppressed voting rights targeting people of color, and republicans have put in their own partisan people to oversee elections who have previously tried to overthrow the last election. Republicans have used the Replacement Theory on minorities by drawing up racist gerrymandering districts to give districts of color less voting representation all across the U.S. So that’s what I think about GRT and how its actually put into effect to harm people of color as well as the anti CRT laws. They both are used for the same purpose to promote white supremacy. There are no laws being passed that targets white people, but there are massive amounts of recent laws targeting people of color and the LGBTQ community. So that is the real replacement theory. And republicans have embraced white supremacy. There isn't even a debate about it. White supremacists have infiltrated the republican party.1 point -
