What makes for good or bad AI in video games?
Kane99 replied to StaceyPowers's topic in Gaming Forum
I think what makes good AI, is AI that learns as you learn. Games like Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, where the AI controlled when it would release a horde of zombies, or release a tank. Or two tanks on you. That is an awesome way to make a game super replayable as well. Another thing, good AI is when you're in a firefight, and since you're stuck in that spot, the AI tosses a grenade. Or they destroy your cover (some games the environment gets destroyed). Bad AI is a given for a lot of games. Look at Cyberpunk 2077, when you shoot in public, or around civilian npcs, most of them duck down. It's really weird. Because many other games have done AI with better results (GTA,RDR, etc). Even the AI in the enemies and cops is lazy in Cyberpunk. You break the law in the game, they appear behind you right away and then once you drive a block away, you essentially lose the cops. It's really plain AI and it's kind of sad. Some people will charge you when you're in cover, but it feels less than you'd expect. But, I still love it lol. -
What are some indie games that look as good as the big budget titles out there? There are games like Cup Head, that I see get a lot of praise for how beautiful it is, and how tough it is. Another game that comes to mind, is Gone Home. Even though it's like a walking simulator, it feels like it could have been made by a big studio. What are some you would add?

The Game Boy came out back in 1989 and it's getting a new game 31 or so years later. The game is called Shapeshifter, and it's about a boy who gets powers at night where he can change into an animal just by touching it. But once morning rolls around, you go back to normal. The game was funded through kickstarter. It looks pretty interesting, and they're releasing it in ROM and Physical form. You can check a demo of the game below. And you can find more details in this article - The Gamer and you can buy the game here - https://greenboygames.com/

Rumors are still swirling about a possible 4K Nintendo Switch coming, and it's most likely going to happen. It would be an easy jump for Nintendo, especially not having to come up with yet another new console. Upgrading the hardware is an ideal step into the future. With that being said though, there needs to be some changes. I personally think the joy cons need work. There needs to be something done to make sure drift doesn't occur in the new model. As well, maybe a secondary controller if drift can't be sorted. Also, bigger buttons. Am I the only one that feels the buttons for the joy cons are a tad too small? Also a better DPad. I prefer the button style of the NES. The joycon buttons just feel a tad bit too small, and to me, it makes it feel cheep for some reason. I get a cheap controller vibe with how small the buttons are. I also think it'd be a good idea to get N64 and Gamecube games added up in the marketplace like how they have NES and SNES. Maybe even the Wii and Wii U. I'm sure it'd be possible, and could rack in a ton of extra cash for Nintendo. What are some other things Nintendo should do to make the 4K Switch, the best Switch?

There was a lot of games released in 2020, with a mix of great, good, fantastic, mediocre and outright bad. But what are the ones that were the biggest letdowns? Maybe it was a game that was hyped up for years and released with problems. *Cough* Cyberpunk *Cough* But, maybe it's another game that you had high hopes for, and it just didn't deliver. This isn't about bad games, but you can include them if it was a game you thought was going to be good. For the most part, I think Cyberpunk 2077 is my game of the year, even with all the bugs and problems. I still have a blast with it and haven't played a whole lot else that released in 2020. But I can't think of any games that were a letdown for me. Maybe that In Silence Game. After playing it a couple times, I didn't feel like it was that good. Discuss away! 🙂

I kind of want to mix old with new. An old PC case with a glass panel maybe, some LED lighting and so on. I like the look of old and new combined, so maybe I'll go that direction. I can probably find a nice tower for cheap or free and just modify it. 😄 Would be a fun project.

The Wii had a lot of shovel-ware games, and most of them were pretty bad. The motion controlled gameplay was a big thing and smaller studios jumped at it. I think a lot of the shovel-ware games sold a lot, just based on that reason.
-
Sports games like FIFA, real time strategy games (as I suck at them), motion controlled games. After the Kinect I am done with them. I will play dance games, if it's a dance mat, but not based on motion. Other than that, I suppose any games like Among Us, where the point is to argue with each other. I can't do it anymore and therefore I don't think I could do it in any other games either.

Yeah that is crazy. There's a ton of DLC packs too, and I think they're charging that amount for most of them aren't they? Kind of makes me sick, as games like this used to come with most of it, and the expansions weren't always that costly. I think a Sims 5 with free DLC packs would go over very well. I could see it helping sell the game even more. EA could afford to do it too.

You're missing the point. That's much different than re-releasing old retro games on current and new platforms. Hell, you're going to get a ton of remasters and reboots for the current gen consoles anyway. Agree to disagree. But that's besides the point, because you're not getting what I'm saying at all. You implied re-releasing these games on current and future gen consoles is going to hurt your market, yet you state it's growing at a steady rate, what is it? Do you even know what you're talking about? I didn't put words in your mouth. I was implying the metaphor you chose about the cars doesn't work here. Because it makes it sound like you're referencing a reboot or remake instead. That's why I responded to that portion. It wouldn't count as a re-release, as it's not the same thing at all. If anything, the car metaphor is more in line with something that was inspired by something from the past. I was comparing your cheese bit. In this case, the bun is the console, the hot dog is the ROM (game). Still not getting the point. I never said it was "authentic" I'm implying that it's the same game on that cart, sure there may be some modding/hacking involved. But usually it's the same ROM you'd see on your NES cart or on the Switch marketplace. The only difference is the hardware it's played on, and the cart. And yeah, you could argue the NES Classic is the same in that regard, because technically, they're probably using the same ROMs that your NES carts had on them. The ROM is the game. The skin it's in, doesn't change that. Sure you can't sell bootleg or hacked games, but that's not the point I was trying to make. I was just referring to the ROM itself. You insinuate that when you tell no to retro games being re-released and saying just go buy the retro consoles and games. That's easier said than Done. Sure you can toss up $150 for a console and games, but I just can't do that, and not everyone else can either. Why should I or anyone else, have to buy a NES for $150, when you could easily get the games digitally far cheaper on other platforms? And why exactly is it a bad thing to have these games re-released on other platforms? The way you talk, makes it sound like it's retro or nothing. I brought up rare & expensive games, because they're hard to come by and extremely overpriced. So that's where digital re-releases come in handy. I brought it up as a counterpoint to your "buy retro instead" point. Of course I'd prefer to own a revolutionary musket, but I sure as hell ain't going to afford one. If I can get the same looking one, for a lot cheaper, and it does the same thing, sure maybe I'll get it. Would make a good display piece I imagine. At least until I can realistically afford the real thing. Which I why digital seems like a great option to me.

Not necessarily true. And even so, that's not really the point. People shouldn't have to buy a retro console in order to play these games. On top of that, they need to get the games, the connections, and so on, and who knows if what you're buying even works. As well, the argument is kind of moot considering Nintendo has re-released their games over and over. And yet the retro market hasn't changed much from what I see. Why should I have to buy an old console when I could buy the game on something I own and have on hand? How are you being pushed out of the market? Do you sell retro games/consoles? Even so, you're not going to get a lot of people buying retro consoles and games anyway. The people seriously going after retro consoles/games are the collectors, and people going for nostalgia. Your market is relatively small, and isn't getting bigger, because retro games have no sustainability because there isn't a finite amount. It doesn't really compare at all though, because technically you're getting the same exact game just on a different platform. Same code, same graphics, etc. You're just loading that ROM on another platform. When you compare it to cars, you're referring to a remake, or a reboot. It's not the same thing at all. There will always be a market for those classic cars, just as there is always a market for retro games. If I put a hot dog in a wheat bun, but decide to put it in a different bun instead, isn't it the same hot dog? Of course not. But that's not the point at all. We're not talking about knock-off devices. We're speaking of ROMs, that can easily work on pretty much every device. Hell, I could make a mod for a genesis cart and put the ROM of SMB3 on it if I had the technically know-how. It may play differently based on the different hardware, but it's still the same game. You act as if people are flush with cash and can buy all of these retro consoles and games too. I can't afford to buy much of anything these days. I wish I could, but playing retro games on other platforms gives me that chance. And what about the rare games, or the overly priced ones? Why should I have to pay hundreds of dollars to play some retro game, when it's on Nintendo's marketplace for $5? I think people should have the option to buy the games elsewhere.

Has anyone here played this game? I am only familiar with it from watching the super best friends play it years ago. Funnily enough, one of the guys from super best friends play, made a video about the game recently. He discusses what happened during the development of the game and so on. It's a good watch. But has anyone played this game? It seems like an over-looked gem, I bet it would have been popular in the US if they released it here.

I haven't been able to play it yet, as the site is down, but a Russian developer released a new narrative/interactive game, free on his website. Sadly, I don't know when the site will be back up. You can download the game here (whenever it's back up) - https://secretdoctrine.me/ As well, check out the video below for more details. And more deets can be had at this article here - TheGG

What are some arcade style sports games? Stuff like NBA Jam, NFL Blitz/Street, etc. I used to play stuff like NBA/NFL Street, NBA Jam, SSX Tricky, etc. But, I'm more leaning towards arcady style of games. Anything like that in Baseball? What about any other sports? I want to give a few a try one of these days, so I figured I'd ask for some suggestions. 😄

According to What If Gaming, a New Super Mario Bros. 3 may be on the way. Someone saw that a listing for the game was on the Nintendo shop, but didn't have a thumbnail. Could this mean a new game in the New Super Mario series is on the way? What are you hoping from a NSMB3 game? I kind of hope they mix it up and include some graphical nods to SMB3. Since it's the 3rd in that series, I'd like to see some nods to it.

Seriously? That's kind of dumb. They could easily toss money at a few studios. They could buy up a publisher and go that route too. But I imagine they have something set up on their end.
-
idk, I kind of feel the other designs were crap compared to what they went with. I think the bottom 2 are the only ones I could see making the cut. The others just look so slapdash. Most of the others don't even look like a PS logo.
-
I don't think that ruins the spirit though, as it's still technically the same experience, it just differs for others. Anyone could get value out of playing SMB3 on their PC through an emulator, just as a kid back in the 80s first did when they played it on their Nintendos. The experience is playing the game. It doesn't necessarily matter what platform it's played on, as long as it plays. The controllers and platforms may differ, but the core gameplay and everything else stays about the same. You are playing the game as it was coded. And I hate to say it, but retro consoles are being forgotten. Kids these days don't know about them, and even so, the consoles are eventually going to stop working. So not selling the games on other platforms, kinds of does it a disservice, as we want to keep these games around for as long as possible. As well, not all retro consoles are easy to come by. And why should people have to buy a retro console, when they already have a switch or PC or other platform on hand? I understand nostalgia is a big thing, and I even prefer playing on the actual console, but not everyone wants to pick up an retro console when they can get the game pretty much everywhere else and a lot easier. And I don't think that makes it less of an experience, or is less value than if you and I play it on the original consoles. And I don't see how it ruins it for classic gamers. If anything, it's probably better, as it means more retro games available on the market for you to grab before the next game collection craze happens. The winners are Nintendo making extra money on their old games, the games being preserved for more generations, and the people who never got to play them in the first place and don't want to go buying old consoles they have no interest in owning. Do you really want the casual gamers to get their hands on retro consoles? Probably not, because they're going to toss them in the closet to collect dust when their nostalgia fix is satiated.

Oh man, I remember this one. 9 years ago, damn it's been a long time.

I think the design looks pretty sleek and sexy. I like the RGB lighting and the overall design. It's nothing too spectacular, but is right where I like it. Sadly, wouldn't be able to afford this yet. Maybe one day I could afford to buy a laptop like this.

With the news of King Kong and Godzilla going at it in movie form soon, I was wondering if we are getting any new monster fighting games? Maybe a new Godzilla Vs Kong game. But, what about some of the classic monster fighting games, are there any games worth checking out from the past? I know there's been many godzilla games, but what about just monster fighter monster?

Has anyone heard of (REDACTED)? It's essentially a service you can use to input a stream to many other streaming platforms. So you can combine the likes of Twitch, YouTube, Facebook (personal) and more. I signed up and am thinking of utilizing a bunch of streaming sites. If you're interested in checking it out, their site can be found here - LINK REMOVED.

EA, was once actually a respectable company, but these days, they're known as one of the worst companies around. What does EA have to do in order to win fans back? To start, I think they could earn some cred, if they actually let their studios finish games. As well, re-do their sports titles and take a break every other year, you can release updated player packs and animations etc. I think if they revive a lot of the old games they used to do, and games from studios they bought up, that would also help. Cutting out lootboxes, and other such gambling mechanics too. Basically anything where it implies you could win something, but there's no garauntee. What would you like to see EA do to recapture their respect?

Has anyone here played Skater XL or Sessions? They're both Skateboarding games, and try to replicate what the Skate franchise has done. Both games have been out for a while, but Sessions seems to be the more popular of the two. I hear with Skate XL, the skating mechanics are some of the best around, but there's not much to do in the game. I might check both of them out. What game would you suggest out of these two? Or should I just wait for EA to do a new Skate game? Or I could just stick with THPS 1 & 2. 😄
