In open world games, do you go back and forth between areas a lot, or methodically work through them?

I always set the FPS camera on a landscape view to enable me see far ahead in GTA 4 and S.A in case the police is after my character's Life.

I usually methodically work through areas in open world games. It helps me fully enjoy each environment and discover hidden secrets.
