Content-related deal-breakers in deciding to play a game?

Recommended Posts

There was another topic that mentioned QTEs, so for me, it's any game that heavily feautures QTEs, either in terms of fighting, gameplay etc, I will hate it. I only mind it in story driven games when it's not this simon sez annoyance where you have to pick the right combinations in order to advance. I hate that the most.

Just don't make the fighting QTEs. I want to have fun with my games.

Not a 100% deal breaker, but a major negative for me is when a game practically requires looking at external sources of information because the in-game guidance is so poor. People moan about hand-holding, but there's a line between that and having you wander around for hours, re-exploring old areas accomplishing nothing in a vague hope to decipher what the developer was thinking, if they'd actually put much thought into that bit.

Oh yeah, getting stuck somewhere when there's no clear path. I've been there with many games. I hate having to get out a walkthrough for a game to figure out what to do next. But if it's something I just can't figure out on my own, and I have sat there for a while trying to figure it out, I'll use a walkthrough just to get to the next point. But then I always find myself relying on the walkthrough for the next parts too.

I have to agree here - pressing buttons like it's Guitar Hero I'm playing.

I agree, you have to make certain elements clear cut because people like me will start doing all kinds of random stuff hoping for some kind of progression.

Are there any deal-breakers for you in deciding to play a game specifically related to game content? For example, @The Blackangel has mentioned she will not kill a rat in a game for any reason, so if rat-killing is required, the game is out.

It's while I would never be able to get 100% completion in RDR2. Assuming I was a completionist and had interest in even going for it.

Another deal breaker is games with drm or require you to always be online. Especially if it's a single player game. I never understood why drm is a thing. I know it's meant to stop people from sharing and downloading these games for free. But I think it hurts more than anything. Because when that games servers are shut down, you can't play it. So I never liked drm and stuff like it.

Well, nothing is ever going to make me kill just about any peaceful animals in any video games. The reason for this is that I have come to value these pets so much because they are quite more loyal than most human beings. You don't get to see loyalty enough now.

Any game that involves zodiac signs, horoscope and the likes doesn't interest me.

I don't mind violent games but if such is included in any  RPG's or whatever genre is a red flag for me.

I came across an article on Screenrant which had a lot of content on RPG games that you should play based on your zodiac signs and I couldn't stop laughing because there are tons of games there I enjoyed playing but they never support my zodiac sign.

Medieval settings or even just fantasy settings with castles and dragons tend to turn me off, so I would probably skip any game like that when I see their screenshots on Steam, just quickly moving on to the new Steam recommendation.

I know there's a lot of "adult" games on Steam these days, and such adult content is usually a deal-breaker for me because I don't play games for porn.

Sports-related content like Rocket League is a deal-breaker because I don't even like real sports, but that's going more into game genres rather than game content (platform games is another genre I'll never play).

But aside from those, most controversial content like violence and gore doesn't faze me... they also don't immediately grab me either because virtual violence and depravity alone don't appeal me in a game. I played Postal for about an hour or so and got bored.

This is where our individual differences and preferences kicks in. I have been bored to death with what EA have been doing with their FIFA games for years. Now comes the concept behind the development of Rocket League. The difference it's got from actual football game is what makes it a continual play game for me.

True. When games do certain settings or genres differently with a more unique concept, they can grab you with the unique take even if you dislike the setting/genre before.

Interesting.I guess I've been lucky and havn't been frustrated by Quick time events. Not too many games I play have many of them though. And I thought it was only me that gets stuck in games.I admit I can be dumb in games sometimes but it is frustrating. I love the modern tomb raiders but I have the walkthroughs bookmarked.I generally don't like puzzles.Lemme rephrase that: I f***ing hate puzzles in games.Online requirements for single player games is a no go for me.Which sucks because I wanted Far cry 6 on PC but gotta get it for PS4 now. And Ubi sucks so I'm gonna get it used.I guess I'm a prude but I don't like much nudity in games either. And since I love animals more than humans I only kill animals when I need to.And parents be VERY careful about killing animals in games when kids are watching  and make sure they have proper compassion for animals. This is very important for not having a fucked up kid when they grow up.
