Nebulous
Does the Internet need controls or censorship? If so, what kind?
killamch89
I'd say keeping kids away from social media and the internet has been heavily censored for years. Why do you think you can't see certain events on Youtube or find them on most legit video sharing websites.
The Blackangel
There's someone out there that would bitch and moan if any kind of censorship or controls were implemented. Then their whining would get others involved to piss and moan about it with them. Parental controls are one thing. Common sense is another. Use that, and you should be just fine. But if you're like me, and spend more time on the dark web than you do on the surface web, then you're the asshole and the one at fault if you delve into things that you shouldn't. Reality vs Adventure
Free speech absolutism vs censorship vs moderation---------- Free speech absolutism doesn't exist. And it can't exist w/o crossing into inciting violence and terroristic activity. Censorship is using the government to decide what is allowed. Reverse censorship is using the government to force certain speech to be allowed. And moderation is key. Don't we all share in universal ethics? There is no need to spread dangerous conspiracies, incite violence, or threaten so that shouldn't be allowed. Hate speech there really is nothing you can do about it. That lies within the realm of the rights of the company that gives your platform. In a free world, advertisers will decide if they want their brand next to hate speech. In a way, consumers is holding hate speech in check.
The Blackangel
“Ethics” is a pretty loose word. What I find ethical would for the most part be the exact opposite of your view. That much I can guarantee. Instead of ask if we share universal ethics, ask why we don’t already. I think the answer is because of individual outlooks that vary so wildly. I would sit back and watch someone in pain and let them suffer. You would try to help them. I would kill animal abusers. You would report them and let the cops deal with it. There’s literally nothing I won’t do to protect the few whom I care about. You most likely wouldn’t kill, die, and/or take the rap for all of them. Reality vs Adventure
Ethics usually relates to what causes the least amount of suffering. Ethics is broken if you allow a maniac promote violence and hatred like in relation to free speech absolutism. I agree to a certain extent that a death can save the lives and suffering of others. Problems arises with lies and conspiracies that promote the opposite effect. The complete opposite of least amount of suffering. Therefore, in relation to free speech absolutism, it promotes the most amount of suffering.
Grungie
I think moderation is key. To make things less of a headache, prohibit stuff that's generally illegal in a lot of places, and also prohibit porn outside of porn sites. I'm also not a fan of places banning people for not agreeing with the site's politics. It feels all fine and dandy if you're in alignment with their politics, but the site owners' could change out and have a new political agenda, and now you're in trouble of getting banned for not agreeing with the new owners' politics. The internet needs to be neutral space except for Flat Earthers, they should be banned. That kind of stupidity shouldn't be allowed anywhere. People who do stupid stuff like put gorilla glue in their hair and do other stupid stuff like that should also be banned outright.

Misinformation and disinformation should be removed and banned as soon as it's found. But banning someone for their beliefs is going too far. you might as well ban religions that you find stupid, and ethnicity's you don't like. It's a slippery slope to go down. I agree that flat earthers are stupid. I don't think there's a single rational person who would disagree. "Stupid" is like beauty. It's in the eye of the beholder. There are things I think are stupid, that the majority of (if not all) the members here would disagree with me about. Like I said, it's a slippery slope and can easily go too far. There was recently a guy from New York who went to Florida, got 100 books banned, and has a list of 3,600 more that he wants banned. My question is, if he's from New York, why the hell does he care about any books a state 1,000 miles away has banned? Shouldn't he be working on that in his home state? I'm not sure - I've been seen all kinds of crazy stuff happening in the US like a kid identifying as a cat and her parents pressured the school to put in a litterbox so most of these things aren't that surprising to me. I mean, you can be sued for ridiculous reasons and may very well lose.
The Blackangel
The cat thing was a woman using that as a protest against transgender people. She dressed in a cat costume and based her bigoted rant on that. She kept repeating that she identifying as a cat doesn't make her a cat. She was bitching about something she knows absolutely nothing about. It was fucking pathetic.

Despite her wholly ignorant point of view, she did at least find a creative way to express it. Most transphobes, homophobes and racists are pathetically predicable, but this is at least something different. She's still very much wrong and for obvious reasons. Identifying as a cat just to make a point misses the point. Being transgender, genderfluid or non-binary isn't about claiming you're something you're not for an audience, it's about finding out how to feel comfortable in your own skin.
