All books online

Recommended Posts

When it comes to books being available on the internet, I do feel that they should all be available on the internet so that you have a choice as to whether you would like them to be either physical copies or online copies.

In terms of them being free, I don't believe they should be unless the author of the book decides to make them free. Many authors put hours and even works of work into writing books and I do believe they should receive something for their work unless they choose not to.

I don't think it's our choice for books to be free on the internet. That should be up to the author and publisher. I do believe all books should be available on the internet whether free or having to buy it. If free, people will look for books most likely at libraries in their online service. In the USA, librarians are at risk of going to prison now just for lending out books to kids that republicans are calling porn. Libraries are shutting down because conservatives are wanting to jail librarians and tell them what books they can keep on shelves. When those libraries stand up for free speech rights, they get shut down. Books that republicans have now banned in schools, well, people still want to read those books. So where do they look? The library. And if it is banned there, then someplace else on the internet? What if the book is banned in the whole state? If that kid downloads a book from somewhere, who will be held responsible? Who will go to jail over it? See how wrong republicans are book banning? This is political now. It's happening. It's important to mention the reality that is taking place in the USA with republicans banning books and not being able to read what you want which is supposed to be protected by free speech rights.

As an author, I can say that books should not be free. I wouldn't want either of the books I have currently written to be going for free. I started writing my first one when I was a teenager. I'm 41 now. The other one took me a couple years to write as well. I've also written several short stories. I put a lot of time and energy into those books and stories. If I was to publish them, I would definitely want to make money off them. Assuming they sold well enough.

As for the medium, I'm fine going either way. Digital is typically where people are going these days. Me personally, I prefer a physical copy of the book. It's just easier to me. Yeah 10 books on my table takes up more space than those same 10 books being on an iPad. But it's in the same boat as games. I prefer physical discs to DDL's.

Either is fine, to me. It comes down to personal preference between the author and reader. You reach a broader audience going both ways, as most people have a preference going one way over the other. If the physical medium went the way of the Dodo, publishers it would turn the publishing world upside down. Some would see it as the best thing since sliced bread since they would no longer have to pay for the printing, and could just sell with less cost to them. However, they would also have the risk of people simply not buying because they don't own/use/like tablets.

Sure, purely digital could save the publisher money, but a lot readers would also stop buying books because they just didn't like the option being taken away from them.

Also, what are you going to do to continue reading if something happens to your tablet or it dies and you can't get right to a power source? You don't have to plug in to charge that paperback.

Yeah... I think "All books should be free" is hopelessly idealistic. Implement that, and you'll find that far fewer books get written (and the quality of those that do get written will likely go down).

As for whether all books should be on the internet... if publishers have the means to digitise them, then I'd like to see them doing so. The more accessible they are, the better!

The author can do as they please with their book - if they want to monetise it or sell it for free, they should be the ones to decide.
