I have not played an Advanced Wars game myself, but I am aware there is a huge fandom around them. Athena Crisis released on Steam a couple days ago in early access and it is said to have 7-player skirmishes, and a map editor. This early access version also includes a prequel campaign to start you off. Check out the trailer below. I'm really taking a liking to the style of graphics they went with.
