killamch89
Hey everyone, I'm curious about your thoughts on this: at what age do you think it's appropriate for a child to have their own mobile phone? Is it more about maturity level or necessity? Let's discuss
Kennysplash
I don’t suppose there is a specific age to determine that. Even a child that is not a teenager yet can make use of mobile devices discreetly, while we have young adults that shouldn’t even use it yet. It’s all about the mindset and maturity. Shortie
I always remember when I got my first mobile phone, I was 12 years old and I had started in secondary school which was a good 2 miles away from where I lived. My mum felt it best to get me a mobile phone so I was able to make contact with my parents or family should I need to. All my kids were allowed a mobile phone from around the same age I was due to them going into secondary school and that being a distance from home. DanTheGamer
There are varying levels of mobile phone access. These days unless you get kids a dumbafied smart phone I don't know that giving them one without proper guard rails is a good idea. The Internet sucks and kind be absolutely brutal. My kid has a smart phone currently at age 5 however, this phone can't even behave as a phone. It is purely setup for educational purposes. This means no YouTube, no web browser. Basically if we say it's not accessible for him he's not getting to it. This will of course evolve as he grows and matures.

At least, something more advanced than a cheap one like a POCO phone. Shortie
Cpvr
I was 13 years old when I got my first mobile phone, but these days, technology has changed a lot and I think a kid should be able to have a phone or a tablet at a young age with parental controls.

I feel in this day and age, kids do need that ability to contact their parents as soon as they need to and high school seems to be the perfect time. I wouldn't allow a child under the age of at least 12 years old to have a mobile unless there was some specific reason for it.
