Developer Intent vs. Player Freedom: What's Your Take?

Recommended Posts

How do you feel about the balance between developer intent and player freedom in games? Should developers strictly guide the player's experience, or should players have the freedom to explore and play as they wish? Share examples of games where you think this balance is well done or poorly handled.

There is a need to find a balance considering the average player. There are games where the players would want a particular upgrade, and I feel that if the number of people asking for that is many, it should be granted.

This is why I love open world and simulation games, because it gives me hte freedom to do whatever I want.  One of my most favorite games is Stardew VAlley.  If I want to farm today, I go and farm.  If I want to go and chat with townsfolks, I go and chat.  I don't like being boxed in

Personally, I think it's about finding the right balance, and it varies depending on the game’s design. Some games benefit from a more guided experience, where the developer's vision shines through, like The Last of Us. But others, like Breath of the Wild, thrive on giving players the freedom to solve problems in their own way. I think the best games allow a bit of both - guidance when needed, but freedom when possible.
