I think there's a problem with my PS Vita's USB port.

Recommended Posts

It has been 6 months since my PS Vita's battery died (or at least since I made a post about it), and I finally got a new one. After replacing the battery with some help from my dad, I realized it still doesn't charge. The USB connection still works, as far as I can tell, but when it's charging, the PS button's light is orange, then turns blue and turns off. I'm assuming that's in the moment it would add 1% to the battery.

I'm starting to think the problem wasn't the battery, but rather the USB port, or something connecting the two. I've been waiting for a new battery so it could last, not slowly die again, so I really need this fixed.

Do you have another charging cable you can use? This would help rule out if it's the charging port or not. I've looked on Google and people are saying that the charging cable might not be giving the Vita enough power to charge properly. Someone on ifixit's community posted this solution below, give it a try and see if that fixes your issue.

Take a phone adapter and the ps vita USB cable and put the vita on charging ,hold ps button(home button),power button and R trigger for 15 seconds.

If this doesn't work, it could be something internally causing an issue.

The second cable I have is broken, and that reboot thing didn't change anything, so it was probably an internal thing all along.

The USB port will either work or not work.  It's not the sort of thing that's prone to the kind of failure you describe whare it can do one thing but not the other.  You really need to find another cable to try it with.  This systematic approach that has really left only two possibilities now:

  1. It's as you suspect @BlazeNinja22 and it's an issue with the internal circuitry connecting the charge port to the battery.
  2. It's as @Ravenfreak suggested and there is an issue with your cable.

Of the two, I feel the charge cable is far more likely.  Internal circuitry isn't very prone to wear or damage, especially on modern, compact devices like a PS Vita whare the electronics are almost always connected through a PCB (Printed Circuit Board).  The only realistic ways to damage them is with moisture or overheating. The same is not true of external cables.  The get bent, stood on, twisted and stretched all the time as well as exposure to moisture and heat.

So don't give up, I think there still a chance for a happy ending here.

The cable I'm using is only a few months old, so I don't think it's already broken. My PS Vita's screen has a faint orange color at the bottom, which might be because of overheating.

Sounds like a connector issue. Could  be something internal or if the cable isn't working correctly. Do you have another PS Vita to try the cable on? Is it a 1000 or 2000 model?

Oops, sorry for the late reply. The one I have is a PCH-1004 and I don't have another one.

Let me suggest you try use a different charging cable or maybe it's a problem with the charging port itself, or it could be something else entirely. You also  need to clean out the USB port because the dirt can prevent the connection too.

The port doesn't look that dirty, even after 11 years, and there's something inside it that doesn't let me clean most of it. It's probably meant to be there. And my other cable is broken.

I was waiting for someone else to reply so I could say this, but I'll say it anyway. Like I said, there's something that looks like a burn mark on the bottom of the screen, so the console might have overheated, and I think I know the cause: when I was a kid, I used to play on it a lot while it was charging. At this point I might just have to get a new PS Vita.

Based on your description of the issue with your PS, it suggest a problem with the charging circuit or the USB port. It's  possible that the USB port is damaged or it could be corroded, so it'll  preventing from charging properly.

Have you tried using a different USB cable or charger? This will help to  rule out any issues with the charging setup.
