Does playing a character help you empathize with them more?

Recommended Posts

Does playing a character help you empathize with them more? My friend finished watching a let’s play of TLOU Part 2, and still disliked Abby by the end. It occurred to me that while I don’t think I’d feel that way, it probably was much easier for me to learn to like Abby because I played as her.

When it came to me playing Hogwarts Legacy last year when that game came out, I would say yes.  Because you can create your own avatar/character and make it look like yourself.  Because mine would always look like me (I might have changed up the hair styles from time to time), it would be easier for me to empathize with my character more.

Playing as a character is what will definitely increase your empathy and understanding of the game. If you experience the story and challenges, it'll help you develop a deeper connection with the character's thoughts and feelings as well. You feel me?
