How Important Is a Game’s Art Style Compared to Its Gameplay?

Recommended Posts

I was really thinking about the role of art style in games and how it can be compared to gameplay. It’s so important to note that a game's art style can make or break the first impression on a game. A unique and a very consistent art style can enhance the overall experience.

What are your thoughts?

I think art style and gameplay are well connected. I said this because a very good art style can draw you in, but if the gameplay is shallow, you'll definitely lose interest.

I also believe that they are interconnected. I’ll add that art style can also help to influence the game's tone, which can help to enhance the gameplay as well.

I think both art style and gameplay are essential, but they fulfill different roles. Art style is crucial for setting the tone and creating immersion, while gameplay keeps players engaged. For example, games like Cuphead and Journey wouldn’t have been the same without their iconic art styles. However, without solid gameplay, even a beautiful game can feel flat.
