GameStop Retro Stores Are Opening

Recommended Posts

It looks like GameStop isn't quite dead yet, as they seem to be rebranding across the country to a more retro style store, simply called GameStop Retro. I checked the store locator on their site, but it doesn't seem like the one nearest to me has rebranded yet. Well, I don't know if they are rebranding necessarily, they may still have regular GameStops around alongside these new stores. But I assume they will rebrand to GS: Retro and move to selling retro games due to current and future games likely going to digital only or mostly in the near future.

So far, the store is said to sell these games/consoles:

Quote

NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, N64, DS, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, PS1, PS2, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox, Xbox 360, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, and Sega Genesis games.

Sadly PSP is not mentioned, but I imagine those could be added at a later date. You can read more about this news here - https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/gamestop-retro-stores-near-me/

GameStop's retro revival is also a smart move. They are actually catering to nostalgic gamers by embracing physical retro games which is very remarkable.

I recently watched an Austin Evans video where he went to a few different Gamestop Retro stores as well as a JacobR video and he does the same thing. Both of them didn't have much luck, most of the games they found were disc based games like PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. Jacob even interviewed a employee and the employee thinks it might not last long because pretty much all the retro stuff they brought to the salesfloor were older games that have been sitting in back for a while. I was thinking about checking out the only location where I live, but now I'll just stick to going to Vstock or order games online if I want more retro games. (I also get retro games from Retro Game Treasure too.) Also Austin resorted to buying games online, and welp he didn't have a good time. Here's their videos:

The problem is that all their so called “retro” games aren’t actually retro. They’re rePro games. Same thing basically, but it’s not the game that was originally created. It’s a cheap knockoff. They’re junk. Not worth the plastic they’re made of. It’s easy as hell to tell a fake from the real thing. I was pissed when I popped open a game of mine and found out it was a knockoff. I instantly took it outside and shot it to hell. Now when I’m looking at buying a game, I ALWAYS check it before I turn over even one penny. One specific screwdriver is all you need.

Same thing that went through my mind when I learnt it was older games they were trying to shift. This definitely isn't going to last very long.
