Sony and Firewalk Studios Announce Concord's Temporary Shutdown Following a Challenging Launch

The multiplayer first-person shooter Concord will be taken offline on September 6 as Sony Interactive Entertainment and Firewalk Studios reassess the game's future after a difficult debut. The companies have announced that full refunds will be provided to all purchasers.

Concord launched on August 23 for PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Despite the excitement, the game only peaked at 697 concurrent players on Steam. Data from PlayStation 5 and the Epic Games Store remains undisclosed.

Ryan Ellis, the game director for Concord, shared a message addressing the community:

To our Concord fans—since the game’s release on PlayStation 5 and PC, we’ve been paying close attention to your feedback and are incredibly grateful to everyone who has joined us on this journey aboard the Northstar. Your support and the vibrant community that has formed around Concord mean the world to us.

However, while several elements of the game resonated with our players, we also acknowledge that certain aspects, along with our launch, didn’t meet our expectations. As a result, we’ve decided to take the game offline starting September 6, 2024, to explore options that better align with our vision and player needs.

During this time, Concord sales will be halted, and we will offer full refunds to anyone who purchased the game for PlayStation 5 or PC. Refunds will be issued to your original payment method if you bought the game from the PlayStation Store or PlayStation Direct.

For those who made purchases from other digital storefronts, such as Steam and the Epic Games Store, refunds will be processed over the next few days. Steam will notify players once refunds are complete, and the Epic Games Store will reach out directly to confirm refunds. For physical copies purchased from retailers, please follow the retailer's refund process to receive your refund.

Please note that once refunded, players will no longer have access to the game.

We’ll keep you informed on our progress and, once again, thank you to all the Freegunners who have joined us in the Concord* galaxy.

It's honestly facinating how badly they managed to fuck this game up. They were just way too late to the party in my opinion, hero shooters just are not as relevant as they were when they started development of this game, and I definitely don't thing the poor launch of Overwatch 2 did them any favors. I do really feel bad for the development team though. Imagine dedicating 8 years of your life to a game that gets axed after only being on the market for 2 weeks. Must be pretty devastating.

That's a very disappointing news.  The game's start was so promising. But I think the struggles with the player numbers and feedback is what led to this decision.
