They only take one at a time to make it seem like they’re in short supply so they can hike up the price. The underpants gnomes have a whole other racket. Clearly, the missing socks have formed a secret rebellion, frustrated by years of being mistreated, mismatched, and discarded without a second thought. They’ve probably taken refuge in an alternate dimension where they can live freely, far away from the tyranny of the laundry room. The socks are alive I tells ya!
