Do Professional Athletes Earn Too Much Money?

Recommended Posts

Do you think the salaries of professional athletes are too high? Some argue that the market decides their value and that they entertain millions, but others feel the pay is excessive compared to essential workers like teachers or doctors. What are your thoughts? Does the high income reflect the risks and skills required, or is it disproportionate?

I think for the most part they’re overpaid. And when they decide to build a new stadium/arena “just because” that really pisses me off. For example, the Wings used to play at the Joe. But for no apparent reason, they decided to move and built Little Caesars arena. The Joe got torn down. Legends played there, but suddenly it wasn’t good enough.

With that kind of money, there’s a lot better things they could put it to.

I agree with moving stadiums thing for the most part but sometimes these things can happen for a number of reasons. One is trying to expand the stadium but the government in that region denies permission to expand or renovate said stadium. It's something I've seen happen in soccer quite a bit.

They work their ass off to stay in good condition. So, the talk of earning too much money shouldn't come in at all as that is not how I try to look at everything. They deserve whatever they are getting at the moment.

So do men and women who work out every day and play on local sport leagues, but they’re not paid millions for it.

You do have a point. Most of them worked really hard to be where they are and it also depends on the sport you're competing in. Sports with loads of sponsorship deals and one that generates lots of money like American football do deserve a lot of money. On top of that, being hit as hard as that can have a lot of lasting effects that affect some players long after they stopped playing.

The truth is that life is not fair for everyone. If life is fair, all of us would be millionaires. So, those who are lucky will surely end up earning way much money than we would ever imagine.

I have to agree. Some things in life happen because you just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

It's all about the team and the league you're playing in. Take for instance, the English Premier League used to be seen as the top paying league for players and if you happen to play for teams like Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, there's a chance to be paid well.

Today, it's Saudi Arabia that's paying players like crazy.

That Saudi money is different gravy and it's life changing money for a lot of those footballers. I can see why a lot of them do accept it.

That is true. The narrative shifts from league to league and depends on the club owners. A rich club owner will always wish to have the club pay players well as that will make more players wish to join the team.
