It shifted gaming away from cartridges and toward CDs, reducing costs and allowing for larger, more complex games. Plus, it pushed gaming into the mainstream with titles like 'Final Fantasy VII' and 'Metal Gear Solid,' creating a new standard for cinematic storytelling in games.
