How Important Is Nostalgia in Nintendo Games Today?

Recommended Posts

With so many recent Nintendo titles tapping into nostalgic elements, whether through remakes, sequels, or references to older games, how do you feel about this trend? Do you think it enhances the experience, or does it hold the company back from creating fresh, innovative content? How does nostalgia impact your enjoyment of their games today, especially if you're a longtime fan?

For as old ass bitch like me, nostalgia is at the top of the list of priorities for gaming. If it’s not number 1, it’s definitely number 2. It’s why all those fucking flashback systems literally make me sick to my stomach.

Honestly, I think the nostalgia trend in Nintendo games is about balance. I love seeing elements from older games, especially when they’re done well and add to the overall experience, like in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where the inclusion of characters and stages from across Nintendo's history feels like a celebration of the company's legacy. But I also think games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons show that Nintendo can create new experiences while still evoking that sense of comfort. If they can keep balancing innovation with nostalgia, I’m all for it.
