killamch89
With the release of devices like the Steam Deck and upcoming models, it feels like PC handhelds are pushing the limits of what we expect from portable gaming. These devices offer console-level performance, but are we starting to see diminishing returns on portability for power? Are we losing the "handheld" aspect by packing so much hardware into such small devices? What do you think? Are these devices becoming too powerful, or is it the future of portable gaming? Anders
I just got a Steam Deck OLED and so far my opinion is that it is the perfect balance between power, size and battery life. The problem with something like Acer's new Nitro handheld is that it's more powerful, sure, but it's so big that you can't really bring it with you without a dedicated bag. It also has a 4K screen, which in my humble opinion is absolutely stupid. At 11" 4K is way overkill. The Steam Deck OLED has a 7,4" screen at 1200x800, which in 2025 sounds like a really low resolution, but honestly at 7,4" it feels and looks great. The Nitro's battery is also the same size at the Steam Deck's, and shockingly, a 4K display will draw a lot more power than 800p will. In short, if you want ultimate power, get a desktop. If you want perfectly decent perfomance in a handheld that will actually fit in your hands, get something like a Steam Deck or an Ally X killamch89
killamch89
I think it’s all about future-proofing. As these devices get more powerful, developers will create games that take advantage of that power, making them even more impressive. It’s not about diminishing returns; it’s about expanding the possibilities of what portable gaming can be. Plus, you can always tweak settings for a more balanced experience. Scorpion
I believe the trend is exciting! While power is increasing, portability remains key. Balancing both will define the future of handheld gaming.
